so how do you know when you've managed the super awesome task of filling up the battery?

I push some buttons on the steering wheel and it'll switch to the screen you're thinking of. What you're really seeing in that picture is additional RCA inputs that I added and the output of a computer that I'm building for the car. It's labeled as DVD player input. I could have said that to begin with, but I like my short version.

I was going to email you. Chomsky is giving a talk at work. I need to see if guests are permitted. Are you interested if they are?

So what was the point? As a non-prius owner (I own a Honda Civic hybrid), I don't know what used to be there or what [is there now] is capable of. Can you enlighten me on the details?

It's not really booting linux. I'm just displaying the output of a computer on the built-in display. See my other comment.

Based on your other comments, I've got to ask... does the Linux box actually get touch input from the display when you've got it switched?

It wasn't a design goal, so I didn't plan for it. Last night I was reading priuschat.com and some people used a different device which does have provide X and Y from the touch screen. From what I can tell, it's available on the CAN bus somewhere. I have an OBD scanner that I'll be connecting to the computer, so if it is on there, I might be able to read it. However, I want to use the scanner to collect other data from the car, so I might now be able to cycle through things fast enough to notice a screen touch.
The other problem is when you touch the screen in this mode, a bunch of DVD options appear. Either I would need to ignore that screen real estate or somehow work around them. What's not clear to me is who is providing those options. The nav system software or some chip on the lockpick. I suspect it's the first one and the lockpick is just enabling the features.
