[Finally, after all this time! Mulder has found that much-desired basketball. He's in luck too, as it's well-inflated, not a sign of wear or tear on it. Too many times, he's come across half-deflated or otherwise messed up ones. But this one is perfect. It's as if there's finally some compensation for all the usual rounds of disappearances and so ( Read more... )

Define unique birthday tradition.

Something other than the standard cake-song-presents-goofy-hats-with uncomfortable-elastic. Though I'm open to "unusual birthday stories" just the same.

[Because any mundane party can be interrupted by random supernatural phenomena.]

Does throwing the birthday celebrant into a shark tank count?

I always knew that a tank of ravenously hungry sharks was missing from my boyhood parties... Was this an intentional throwing?

Hoops? What are those? I've never shot a hoop.

[ Tenten is probably the densest when it comes to the human world at least she learns fast. I mean, after all, if she's a ninja with amazing accuracy sports are probably great for her! ]

[Mulder was expecting confusion, so he's easygoing about that.]

There's no guns actually involved, so it's not that kind of shooting. It's a game, played with a bouncy orange ball. The goal is to toss the ball into a hoop as many time as possible, and try to prevent your opponent from tossing it in more times.

[To go with the very basic idea.]

[ Oh. That sounds really easy. So easy a caveman can do it! She was trained for this! She has the speed, the accuracy, and the.... something else! ]

A gun? [ SHE SHOOTS KNIVES OUT OF SCROLLS> ] I think I can manage to do that. It sounds like a fun game though.

[Ah, a very different world, then. Mulder is eager to find out more about that, but one thing at a time.]

It is, both in playing and watching. There are even professional teams back home who play against each other, and people watch them for entertainment.

I just play casually though. Don't worry, it's not so bad to pick up when you're playing for fun.

Shooting hoops, Mullally? I am in the mood to shoot something this fine day...

I'm afraid this is a non-gun type of shooting. No hoops will be harmed in the playing of this game. Usually. Is something wrong, Captain?

Pity. No, nothing is wrong, sir, [Lies!] and it is clearly your birthday and we shall shoot your hoops in your own style and fashion. Where are you?

[But watch out, for he is a PROFESSIONAL at finding out the truth.]

I'm out near C7, and it's true, there's only so much bounding off the side of the building I can do before it gets old. Maybe we can remedy the lack of hoops somehow.

[And figure out what's wrong, but he can be sneaky about getting at that.]

I think I'll have to ask whether you have what you might consider any unique birthday traditions first. I'm...not at all certain what constitutes one, at least from my world.

...I didn't know you played basketball.

Anything aside from cake, singing, and so on. Bonus points for anything paranormal that may have been involved.

Then you have no idea how long I've been looking for a good basketball around here. It's a pretty good way to unwind in my free time- uh, whatever free time I ever have, that is.

Well, we certainly had no shortage of paranormal elements. I'm just not sure you could call that a tradition.

We all have a bit more free time around here, though, don't we?

So you happened to be besieged by paranormal entities around the time of people's birthdays pretty often?

[And yeah, the free time. It's something that's still weird to have so much of. Even the 'work' he makes for himself to do doesn't take up the same amount of time as work back home.]

All the more reason for me to have it around. That way I don't have to fill the free time with arts and crafts or any other new hobbies. As much as I've been dying to make a sculpture out of nothing but used gum and elbow macaroni...

Ouch, I'm getting a headache just thinking about it. They didn't give you a bump for every year or anything, did they?

I think I'd invest in a really hard helmet just for the occasion.
