You should read Rim. It's sci-fi, but it's not part of a series and it's relatively short, so you can get onto "real literature" afterwards. Still, though, Rim is a combination of sci-fi/Japanese culture and, well, I'll tell you more later. But I think you'd like it. Or at least be amused by it. :)
