personally I would say that it can't hurt. The worst they can do is not interview/say no thank you after an interview. Nothing ventured, nothing gained right? Its not going to hurt your current job, so you don't have anything to lose.
could you talk to someone who is running the recruitment? They might be able to give you a picture on whether it's worth applying (as if you say there is an internal candidate, pregnancy should be irrelevant).
Failing that - go for it! Applications are hard work but it's rarely wasted - it's useful to crystalise in writing what you can do and you can cut and paste the blurb another time!

At my office, a pregnant lady was appointed into her position about 2 months ago (she was internal, but not anywhere near our department). The baby is due in early September. My superiors were only happy to take her on as she was the right person for the job, though the decision process did take a bit longer - I don't know if that was anything to do with her pregnancy however. She and another candidate were the final remaining contenders for the post, and the second-best candidate is going to cover her maternity leave :)
