Not being in on the Harry Potter mania is a little strange - it's like everyone around me is part of a big celebration, but I'm not playing. I can participate, sort of, e.g., ordering the books so my niece and nephew got it first thing today, but mostly, it's not my party. Maybe it's like being Jewish at Christmas time? After weeks of buildup, ( Read more... )

No Harry Potter for me, either; to me it's a kids book. I don't like the story, don't like the Universe, don't like the heroes. I merely watched the movies with Chloé and well... That's all.

And the Tour de France? *sighs* Do you know anything more boring than guys (nicely muscled, of course) climbing abrupt slopes in the heat for hours? Honestly, I don't!!!

So... It's hot, and I'm bored!

I just don't have an affinity for children's books, or fantasy writing. At least, not that particular kind of fantasy!

I was in Paris once when the Tour de France ended, and I didn't go to see it. I regret that, but that's about as much attention as I would ever pay! Except, as you said, to the muscles.

And what do you know? It's hot here, and I'm bored, too!

YAY! Wow, that is great. You definitely deserve a break after the HP madness. How lucky for me that it's taken the (perfect) form of the AoL. Heehee - I love it. Off to add it to my collection...

Try winning the best dressed witch prize sometime, then you'll see the magic! It doesn't matter that every other participant (other than the friend who accompanied me) was under fourteen. Some of them were pretty stiff competition, I can tell you. Those twin Hedwigs were at least eight, in any case. And I got a boxed set of the first five books in HARD COVER. <|:D

I saw your post about winning the contest. That was a great story! It was fun to see everyone all excited and in costume. All that for a book. Can't argue with that at all.

Always happy to see friends win stuff :)

Heh. I'm not doing the dork meme, because I would have a terrible time narrowing it down to 5. I love your thing about "auto-definitives." I do the same thing, but the only ones I remember off the top of my head are "polysyllabic" and "sesquipedalian."

Did you ever play a computer game called WordZap? You'd love it, but you'd have my problem: after playing it a bunch you'd keep coming up with new words for every set of letters you looked at.

I haven't read any of the Potter books either, and this is especially bad considering my profession. The sucky thing about Harry Potter for a primary grades teacher is that the books are written at too high a reading level for most of my students. I encourage the parents to read the books to their kids, but the kids keep wanting to use HP for their independent reading, and with a couple exceptions, they are totally not up to it. They fill in with what they know from the movies and don't get anything from reading it ( ... )

Yes - polysyllabic and sesquipedalian are perfect! And you've reminded me of two more: nonhyphenated and word. (Of course, non-hyphenated would be antidefinitive.) You can be an honorary member of our gang. Should we get jackets?

I'll have to check WordZap out. Also, I forgot to chime in in your defense on the "diocese" pronunciation on TWoP. I'm totally on your side there.

And yeah, I guess you should be on the HP train. It's a shame the books are beyond the grasp of some kids, but at least they want to read. That's got to be a good thing. (Maybe the thief of HP4 will return it when finished?)
