Altoona: a post-Charisma SVU ficlet

It's not long and it's really not perfect. Just a quick little something to make Elliot (and myself) feel better.

How could he explain that he'd stopped doing that years ago, that in trying to keep his work life and home life totally separate, the only thing he'd managed to do was separate himself from both.

That line is a great explanation of how Elliot has managed his life. He's tried so hard to separate himself from everything that he no longer has anything to hold onto.

He saw his own futility. His own powerlessness. He saw his future, his past. An endless series of kids he was too late to help. Or not there to protect.Yep, Elliot for all his attempts at separation tends to get caught up on what he couldn't do ( ... )

Thanks so much for the reply, Cat! I've never posted anything longer than a drabble for SVU. I have lots of half-finished WIPs and ideas lying around. But I really wanted to try to write something to make sense of a storyline the writers refuse to actually write.

He's tried so hard to separate himself from everything that he no longer has anything to hold onto.

Exactly! It's heartbreaking to see that. I'm so glad it came across.

I really like the bit about him feeling his heart beating -- it's a nice soothing moment after all the angsty thoughts.

Thanks for that, too - I was worried about that line. It was one of those late additions, you know!

One question, who is the "she" he goes to? I'm assuming it's someone from an episode I missed (I often have a brain freeze and forget SVU is on). Or is it supposed to be vague? It's supposed to be Alex, the ex-ADA who's living somewhere in Witness Protection. The name of the piece, "Altoona," comes from a running joke we have on the TWoP SVU forum - that Olivia and Elliot take ( ... )

Very good, very well written, very good peek inside Elliot's mind.

Thanks, Aline! It was good therapy to write after last night.

I love your icon, by the way! There's a moment in last night's episode when Stabler channels Keller's walk and glare. That made me smile.

What a nice way to sort out and explain the insanity that's been going on, not to mention a nice way to give Stabler a little relief of sorts. You really captured the frustration and the inequity of the situation. Good job, Ultraviolet!

Thanks for the encouragement and commiseration, spacedog! It's kind of sad that we have to turn to fic these days to see Our Heroes rather than the caricatures onscreen.

You don't really know me, but I just wanted to tell you this was perfect and made my little 'ship-loving heart skip a beat. Aside from the happy angsty beautiful Alex/Elliot vibes, I love your take on Elliot and how he dealt with the situation. I rather enjoyed the episode except when they sent Elliot home, so this made me enjoy it just a little bit more.

Brilliant line. That is all.

Hey - I know you, a little. You come out and play at TWoP sometimes, don't you? And I must have seen you around LJ, because I do know that icon - it cracks me up every time I see it.

Those are the best kind of vibes! Well, along with lust-filled. But those are a given.

I rather hated the episode, but at least we agree on the sending-home part :)

It's so annoying not to know what is going on. I know there have been hints - a lot at your site - but since we don't know exactly what it is, I couldn't get too specific here. I'm glad this spin on things worked for you.

Thanks for the nice words, and for finding me!

I haven't played at TWoP in a very long time, mostly cause you guys don't like me. [shrug] Eh, what'm I gonna do? But thanks for the icon-love :)

I think the fic will fit with what's going to happen, or at least what we've heard will happen. Too bad the show's spiraling down the tubes as they do it. Is it too much to ask for some decent character development? Or for fans that don't squeal "Emmy!!" every time someone overacts? Er, ignore that last bit...

[small voice] Do you mind if I friend you? [/small voice]

Aww, that's not true, I'm sure. We don't hate anyone. Except the current SVU writers. And the costume and lighting department. And Dick Wolf. And Neal "sliding into Benson dependence" Baer.

Okay, we do hate a lot of people. But not you.

TWoP is a tough place. When I found it, I almost left because there wasn't a lot of Stabler love. But I stuck around, and probably drove off some folks who don't like him. Which is a shame, because, honestly, the more, the snarkier.

That was just beautiful, Ultraviolet. I wish that the SVU writers could write Elliot with the same subtlety(is that a word?*g*). And why aren't you writing SVU/Oz crossovers? You could just put your two favorite shows together. I'm just saying.*g*

Hey, Ana Paula! We're all about SVU today, aren't we? Hee.

Subtlety is definitely a word - a great word. Sadly, it's not in the SVU writers' vocabulary anymore, it seems.

And why aren't you writing SVU/Oz crossovers? You could just put your two favorite shows together. I'm just saying.*g*

Well, funny you should mention that! I have an elaborate SVU/Oz idea, but I just haven't taken the time to plot it out properly. But I am going to get back to it, because I think it would be fun.

Thanks so much for the nice words - glad you liked my little take on things!
