Favorite books meme

Apr 07, 2005 23:45

Because I never post anything, and I always want to do these memes. Stolen from kitestringer:

1. Choose five of your all time favorite books.
2. Take the first sentence of the first chapter and make a list in your journal.
3. Don't reveal the author or the title of the book.
4. Now everyone try and guess.

I'm even stealing her warning - all of these are not fiction )

Ha - that was fast. I'm embarrassed because I couldn't guess your favorite Oz character. I can't believe it's Ryan! We'll have to chat about that sometime, in regard to FT :)

I wondered about the FT tie-in; can't wait to hear that!

I think I know a couple of the other quotes here - is the first one from The Great Gatsby? And the last one sounds Sedaris-y, but I can't recall which book it's from.

You're good! Yes on The Great Gatsby, and your instinct was correct on Number 5. But you get only half-credit ;)

The first one is from The Great Gatsby, isn't it?

You are correct, madame! Oh, and I love that icon. Even if I can't read the teeny tiny writing.

Not a revolutionary choice, but the man can write. "Her voice is full of money" could describe Alex.

I love that icon

Thanks; I've been getting many compliments on it. And if you could read that writing, I would be skeered of you and all your other superpowers too!

"Her voice is full of money" could describe Alex.

YES! I've always thought that a perfect description of her voice.

You are gonna tell us the rest of the lines eventually, right? I'm dying to know what #5 is.

:( The only one I know is #1, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, one of my favorites too.

Yup - that Number One is The Great Gatsby. I've read the book many times, and I'm not sure I would have guessed it. I had to look it up. Is that cheating on my own meme?

I didn't think anyone would get Number Two - maybe it's too obscure. I never know about these memes. The InternetS are hard!

Well, the Sedaris hint cracked #5 open a bit for me. I know it's not Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim or Me Talk Pretty One Day, so I'm thinking Naked.

Give the girl a cigar! Or, you know, half of one :) I love me some David Sedaris.

Christ, I am such an idiot. I read Naked years ago...

At least you knew one of mine, without the title in the line! I'm telling you, this has been a real blow to my "well-read" image of myself.

Off to reveal my last two, since I don't think anyone's going to get them. I wouldn't have myself. Well, I might have gotten one.

Well, this really hammers home just how under-read and blithely shallow I am. Note to self: read more books without pictures.

I'm rather partial to short-stories as well. Not sure that I'd do any better with that list, but I'd enjoy seeing it.

Wendy! Yay - you're an LJer. Finally. Hee.

Note to self: read more books without pictures.

Hee - those are "art," too. They are!

But, yeah, this whole first line thing has been very depressing. I haven't known or been able to guess many. And I didn't even know the first lines of the ones I chose. So, I've decided (prompted by another LJer) that first lines are not memorable. Or that, mostly, memorable ones do not a favorite book make!

Hey! I finally succumbed a few days ago. And now I'm just pretending that I know what I'm doing. (I blame you and LH for getting me into this. Heh.)

::Whew:: Really glad to know that I'm not the only one having trouble with the first lines. I'd love to know your top 5 short stories though.

Yay, Anomalys has arrived! This is a very labor intensive meme, Ultra -- nice work. (But for the record, is it me-me or meem when said out loud?) I want to play too, but I don't really know how. Maybe I'll just leave you with the first sentence of the first chapter of the only book I have at hand right now. "Both Congress and the Commission amended the Guidelines Manual during 2003."

Um. I'm not very cool.
