This taste presents itself at the moment of being startled and then leaves in less than a second.

It is never present otherwise.

I didn't mean it so much in a literal, physical sense -- but that it would make sense (to me at least) for there to be some kind of primitive, instinctual association going on that identifies fear with blood, and it's not a far leap from there to get to a metallic taste...
