So, it's kind of funny because people are disappointed with Spiderman 3 and the things there saying are basically how I felt about the first two films: corny, melodramatic, kind of stupid, underwhelming. I guess I should be happy they see my view point or something. The real deal is that better super hero movies have to be made. Christopher ( Read more... )

The problem is that there's no real incentive to make superhero flicks that are any better than mediocre. There's a built in audience on so many levels, as attested to by the fact that train wrecks like Spiderman 2 (and soon to be 3, I guess) break records. Granted, there have been some successes (the first 2 X-Men movies, Batman I guess) but essentially we're talking about the cinematic cash-cow flavor of the month, or decade as the case may be.

I'm not giving up hope on Watchmen, though I guess that isn't strictly a "superhero" movie, Dr. Manhattan notwithstanding.

you're right that they don't have any economic incintive to make smart super heroes. I feel like with watchmen, since the built in audience will be demanding intellegence and it's like a deconstructionist superhero tale, it will have the intellegence one could have expected from Batman or X-Men 3. I have devised this equation. Intellegence of Watchmen (or other books like Dark Knight Returns, etc.) - hollywood/superhero movie expectations and market forces= average intellegence of modern superhero tale. or, intellegence of modern superhero tale- buisness side= Spider-man/Fantastic Four
