Prop 8:

Oct 27, 2008 09:55

I got super pissed about prop.8 (banning gay marriage in California) and this guy who basically claimed that the constitution had no problem with it, and that even if it did it didn't matter because it was being passed by the state of California.  Riiight, because states are totally independent of the constitution - in fact, it only applies in D.C ( Read more... )

The fact that it's so clearly religiously motivated is more problematic, so you could potentially argue on first amendment grounds. And the "sovereignty" thing you said is a great argument for why their claim to an ethical stance is absurd. But I don't know about the constitution angle.
While they're likely too stupid to respond on rational grounds at all, one can easily argue that homosexuals are not "a class of citizen." They want to redefine marriage (or I guess they'd say "more clearly define it) for everybody--gays can still marry, as long as the person they marry is of the opposite gender ( ... )

I think that as long as gay people are being blatantly treated as a class of citizen, then they are one in terms of legality. I also think that people unmotivated by fear/hate/bigotry realize that it's the entering into a contract to be responsible and connected to the person you love that matters (which is why loveless immigration marriages are very much frowned upon). I know you agree, and this isn't serving to convince you of anything new. I'm just saying that there's a fairly strong legal reasoning behind the legalizing of gay marriage earlier this year ( ... )

I have two points.

1.) The only reason I (an atheist) don't murder a good deal of my friends is because I would get in a lot of trouble. Also I guess my friends wouldn't talk to me anymore, that would kind of suck.

2.) I think people should vote yes on 8, it is a moral issue and if fags get the right to marry then dinosaurs might rule the Earth ONCE AGAIN!!!!(in your head say this in a Vincent Price voice, don't worry I'll wait)

actually that might be kind of cool, NO ON EIGHT!
