For an easy to use laptop with great functionality, I'd go with an Apple. At that price range, you may be able to snag a new iBook with a Student Discount...or do what I did and get a used one on eBay. Easy to setup, built in wireless (usually), has Microsoft Office (when purchased seperately or obatined in...other...ways). Anyways, I used to be all hardcore on the PCs, but I love my PowerBook.

apples may be over priced, which is where you are coming up with this "least bang for the buck" thing, but for overall reliability apple is the way to go. for people who dont know what they are doing macs are the answer.

besides, now that apples can run windows you'd be stupid to get anything else.

they are spendy. like josh said, its gonna cost in the top of your range.

ps devin, im sure tyler bradford is very happy that you are advertising for him on livejournal.

since you already have a computer you might as well just fix it up with that money it seems like. although if you already have a monitor that seems like a waste of money to just buy a new one. you should make it faster and get a bigger hard drive!

Also, huge warning: DO NOT BUY A TOSHIBA. Some rare people do not have problems with these but after working two years in ResNet, I can safely tell you that Toshiba laptops have some of the most annoying problems that truly seem to randomly occur. So if you don't go with Apple...at least don't go with Toshiba.
