Okay, this news report on ESPN SERIOUSLY pissed me off.

No, the only reason--the ONLY reason--Zidane's career is ending on a "sour note" is because FUCKING ESPN MADE HIM THAT WAY. I don't watch the news, period. And this is the reason why. The reason this example stands out among others is because of how grossly over-exaggerated that action was. Yes, it warranted ejection, no, it made no sense, but the only reason his "entire career" and reputation are smudged is NOT because of the incident, but how the media is and will be reporting it.

Why is it that when a person achieves greatness as Zidane did during the cup, that one glaring mishap is going to be the thing that shines in the media's eyes for all of eternity?

That's the way the media works in the Western World, I'm afraid. Alas that our choices are between that, and strictly controled, government-run systems like that of the infamous Iraqi Minister of Information.
