i personally dont have any problem with them keeping myspace and things like that off of school computers. i hardly think that blocking it from usage during school would be detrimental to the kids' at all. if they are using a school computer, one can assume that they are supposed to be doing school work anyway. little kids do not NEED a myspace account. they are far too susceptible and naive to be able to judge people's characters in reality let alone through conversations online where anyone could be anything. (even the kids lie about their age and end up getting into trouble without running into a pedoohile) what good does it do a parent to keep their kids offline or online with supervision if the kid goes to school and does it anyways? i am usually against these types of bans on our freedoms, but CHILDREN are at stake. and like i said no one really NEEDS a livejournal or a myspace account, and they really do just set themselves up for trouble.
The basic problem is that it's unnecessary censorship. It's one thing to want to keep kids away from predators, it's another to lay a blanket over the entire Internet saying that everything but teletubbies.com is unsafe for kids under the age of 18. It's like that episode of Simpsons where Homer tries watching Ned Flanders' TV, and the only channel he gets is the religious channel. "180 channels locked out!"
What they need to do is monitor activity on the Internet, and disallow things like chat rooms and private messaging and pornographic content (obviously). Having a blog or journal on MySpace or LJ is fine...it's just more drama for us older kids to laugh at. But it doesn't matter how young a person is, they should be allowed the choice of viewing whatever they want on the Internet as long as an adult is nearby to keep an eye on it.

I'm so fucking sick of this 'keep kids away from sex' thing. Isn't that what parents are for?
