A Discourse on Love

I say frequented, but it wasn't so much a place really as it was a clique of nerds, geeks and dorks (oh, and let's not forget the most freakish of the lot: the stupid drama majors.) So, why did you two rule out the possibility that Love is just brain chemicals to encourage us to procreate? That was something that always popped up in conversations on the subject of love at GCC...

The entire sum of human experience is based on brain chemistry. That in itself doesn't tell us much. Knowing the theory behind a given chemical reaction doesn't tell us the practice of its operation. The human brain, being a chaotic system, can't be reduced to a simpler form. Emotions must therefore be considered experientially. Psychology, much like meteorology, is a soft science. It can observe trends and make general predictions, but the more specific the question the less accurate the answer. Besides, neither of us is a neurologist nor a psychobiologist, so we wouldn't have had much to talk about if we'd gone that way with the discussion.

Allow me to elaborate. Yes, our brain chemistry is such that we enjoy eating. Why? Eating is necessary for our survival. Does this explain why we generally prefer unhealthy foods to healthy foods? No. In fact, recognizing the "purpose" of the imperative gives us very little insight into its actual nature. Saying that love is "just" brain chemicals is like saying that a chair is just atoms... it entirely misses the point.

And seriously, I'm caught here...I wouldn't call myself a practicing psychologist.

But damn does it feel good to be called such.
