Field trip!

Oct 08, 2009 15:20

Once a month the kids go on a field trip and today was the day. At first we went to these tombs that are world heritage sites but they were doing something (I think it was some type of re-enactment) so we had to come up with another place to go. I find it amazing that we were going to go to ancient tombs to place running games and such. But it is ( Read more... )

I had no idea about the age thing...it sounds...very strange. If you ever get a better understanding, please let me know, I'm interested and confused. Hahah

But I'm glad you enjoyed the science! How do you teach them though without knowing the language? Are there other teachers around to explain stuff in Korea? If there are now, will there always be or is on you to learn Korean? Have you picked up any of the language yet?

I think that's enough questions for now...

I hope you're well!!! <3

All classes are in English. There are helpers who speak Korean for the youngest kids (who are US age 4) but they don't speak English. One of the school rules is that there is no Korean spoken. Even the kids who 'don't speak English very well' are pretty damn good (better then I was at Russian, which while not saying much, is still something). The top class during the morning session (I think the kids are like 6 or 7) speak really well and there hasn't been anything I had to say to them that they couldn't understand.

Haven't picked up any of the language yet. I get hello or goodbye or something like that but I don't know exactly what it is or when to use it. I also know cheers.

Wow, that is really awesome and makes me feel like a total idiot - haha. We're lucky if a kid had a preschool tape that teaches them 'hola', and how to count...let alone any amount of fluency. Anyway, I'm glad for you too, since you don't have to worry about being a teacher *and* learning a new language, but I'm sure some of it will eventually come to you.

That's strange, but kinda makes sense in a weird way.

That's snack time encounter is similar to what I've read and learned about Korean school culture-that they revere there teachers hard core essentially and put them on a pedestal.

And I second hearing about the actually teaching methods more! (though I'm guessing the older kids know a decent amount of English?)

So are you feeling more comfortable there, more so than in your earlier post?

Yeah, it is nice to be able to settle in. Every time I start a job the first day (or two) drains me of energy, but as I get in the swing of things it gets easier, and that is the case here too.

Thanks for the birthday wishes!
