Since you're used to politely dealing with peopling talking to you and such, I think you handled it well. You gave the universal signs of not wanting to talk to him, which even brought in someone else to help you before you had to get someone else. Since he didn't speak English and since your obvious signs brought someone else in you couldn't have been more proactive.
