America didn't expect anybody to be in the gym when he came in, carrying a basketball under one arm. He'd forgotten to return it a couple days before, and on a rainy day without much else to do, it seemed like as good a time as any.
But the sound surprised him, and he followed it to the guy on free weights over here by himself. The amount of weight on it was impressive by anyone's standards, but America took quiet satisfaction in the knowledge that he could bench way more than that.
He didn't say it, at least. Anyway, seeing someone he didn't know had handed him a new objective. "Hey, how's it going?" he asked blithely. "Workin' hard?"
Heero watched the man enter without speaking, and replied only with an affirmative grunt when addressed, pausing only briefly to acknowledge the other man's presence. A naturally social creature, Heero was not.
Heero wasn't in his room, wasn't in the cafeteria, wasn't on the beach. Duo had showed him the place the day before, but now he had wandered off.
Then he remembered the light of interest that had flickered in Heero's eyes when they stopped off at the gym. Could he have gone there?
He poked his head in, and heard the clank of weights. Yup. Had to be him. He saw the figure pressing an inordinate amount of weight and headed towards him, pausing not too far away. As usual he couldn't help but stop to stare. But then, Heero Yuy made most people stop and stare. Even if the gym was full he would probably stand out.
Duo watched a moment longer, then smiled. "You really should have a spotter," he said.
"Do I." He grunted, between reps. It wasn't exactly a question, and he didn't so much as turn his head to look in Duo's direction. Focused, that was the polite term. A more accurate one might have been blunt, or even rude. It was neither, just the way he was, "Are you volunteering?"
Duo was used to his tone and it didn't phase him. That he spoke at all was a sort of courtesy. "Heh, yeah," Duo chuckled, sticking his hands in his pockets as he approached. "I can spot you under that thing while I figure out how to get that much weight off ya." He had no doubt without looking that it was a weight well beyond what he could lift.
Heero grunted and racked the weight with some effort. It was tiring, and if Duo hadn't been there, he might have considered lessening the weight, for comfort's sake. Somehow it rankled, to seem weak in front of him. Another thing to be set aside and reviewed later. He settled on simply, lowering aching arms to his side, saying, "If it's too heavy, you shouldn't offer."
