BEST MOVIE OF 2008

I saw two new movies this year, both of them based on comic books. Iron Man was good, but The Dark Knight was better. Congratulations, Batman!

BEST BOOK OF 2008

Didn't read any books published this year; best book I read this year that I hadn't read before was Michael Bywater's Lost Worlds.

None. There will be no excitement in 2009, by order of the President-elect. In these troubled times, we must stockpile excitement against future shortages.

I've had all the excitement I can handle, personally. "May you live in interesting times," bah.

The year's not over yet--you could still see or hear or read something great! The Amanda Palmer CD is pretty darned good, I keep telling you...

I just skimmed through my log of 2008 reads, and there's wasn't much that lit my world on fire, and very little of those few were published in 2008. Three Shadows was excellent, if you want a graphic novel, but you'll have to track down your own copy--we got it from the library.

I honestly was a little nervous about going online today for fear that I'd hear more bad news.

I read and watched and listened to a lot of good stuff this year! Just very little of it was new! This isn't a comment on the quality of entertainment lately, just that I'm lazy as heck.

Huzzah, I've got one! Lois Lowry's The Willoughbys. A demented send-up of all the trappings of "classic," "old-fashioned" books. F'rinstance, these are old-fashioned kids, and kids in old-fashioned books tend to be orphans; ergo, these four should be orphans... and they set about a plan to become so. (Their parents don't really like them anyway.)

I can't say it's the best thing I've ever read, but it made me laugh and it made me happy, and that's about all I'm asking right now. (PS I did finally read the second two Wayside School books! Speaking of things that make me laugh.)

I just read Philip Roth's Everyman and it blew me away.
