My parents are going to come down in a few weeks. They say they're going to make an effort to accept me. Actually, they said they would make an effort to 'tolerate' me. Which is a horrible word. But it's better than hate, right?

Need more beer cans so I can empty them and leave them lying around!

I suppose it's a first step. A small one, but a first step nonetheless. It's certainly not something to throw back in their faces. Rather, this is your chance to show them that they can, and must do better than simply "tolerating" you. You're still Emilio, their son, a brilliant pre-med student and a wonderful young man. Do you know how long they're planning on staying?

Not really. I told them they couldn't stay with me because I don't want them here. But they are going to COME here for dinner or something. Who knows. I think they're just shocked I made it without them. I'm pretty sure they were expecting me to show back up at their doorstep, cold and hungry and begging to be let back in.

Good for you. I think it's important that they understand that you can make it without them, and that they are the ones losing something now, not you. You have a family here, and we'll always take care of you. They can open their minds and be a part of that, or they can be isolated. I certainly know which one I'd choose.

I know which one I would choose too.

How are you, Renee?

Whoa, that's big. I guess it's good news, though, even if they are using stupid words. We will show them that it is time to accept and to love! How could anyone not love us, right? ;)

If the world was a perfect place, parents would love their children unconditionally. All parents, not just gorgeous people like Pierre. As things are, though- and I do believe you deserve much, much more than just being tolerated- I think it really does mean something that your parents want to make the effort. Some parets do not think their child was worth the effort. Yours do. That's something.

It is something. And I'm glad they feel that way. And I hope I can get them to the place where they can do that 'more than tolerating' thing.

But if all parents were like Pierre, the world would be so much better.

They shouldn't have to make an effort to 'accept' you, Emilio. You're a really lovely person, just like Pierre.
