Defiance | The treatment of women in the scifi genre up to and including this series. What is the series actively engaging with? What is it ignoring? How do we think about these strong/various/flawed/magnificent female characters differently specifically because this is a scifi series?

LBD | This series broke GREAT strides in terms of using contemporary forms of mass communication (twitter, tumblr, youtube, facebook, various websites created/usurped) in order to actively tell a story with a direct relationship to the audience - both the creators AND the characters (ex: both Ashley Clements AND Lizzie Bennet had active twitter/tumblr accounts that interacted DAILY with their fans) .... how did this change the storytelling and the separation that we have from the characters?

Many of Austen's texts are about communication - the social pressures that force communication into boxes that do not allow for truthfulness or honesty. In particular, Pride and Prejudice details how even within the safety of the family space - communication can be stunted. As Lizzie's lines of communication between herself and her sisters (Lydia specifically), less and less is told to the audience. I saw a lot of confusion and anger about this online in fandom spaces - WHY AREN'T WE SEEING MORE OF LYDIA? was a constant complaint. How might we ( ... )
