Ryou flickered through his e-mail on his cellphone as he stood against his desk in the teacher’s lounge. It was already half past nine and most of the teachers had gone home, leaving him all alone.

Ryou flipped his cellphone close and slipped it back in his pocket. It was always either him or K.M. who was in the lead every year. Out of all the players who participated in The Game so far, only a handful of them had actually managed to score it with a student. It was a sad fact, but it didn’t stop the rest of them from trying.

With no progress on his end, K.M. was naturally in the lead. Kei never had a problem leading the ladies on, but he also had a penchant for being an asshole. It was this very behavior that Ryou considered his only advantage against him. Last he heard Kei had gotten into a little fight with his pawn, and if he kept up with the act, Ryou might actually have a chance.

Ryou narrowed his eyes in thought. He didn’t want to think that selecting Haruki Shinjo as his pawn was a mistake. Still, after privately seeing her for over a month, all he ever got out of her was a stupid kiss-and that was with the help of a Pinot Noir. As a mathematician he didn’t want to see miscalculations in his book. Haruki was proving to be a bit more difficult, but he liked to consider her as a challenge. The last four years had been insipidly easy, and winning this game would be his sweetest victory yet.

Ryou grabbed his coat to leave the room. It was time to play serious.

Haruki idly played with her pen in the air and tried to concentrate on the paper on her desk. It was to no avail, since all the numbers on the page just seemed to be swimming in her head.

It wasn’t like Haruki didn’t know how to answer. Her private sessions with Prof. Hirose would attest to that. Ironically, he was the same reason she remained distracted.

Haruki looked around the room. The rest of the class kept their heads lowered, all busy with the test. She directed her gaze to the man sitting up front. Her Algebra professor was busy checking papers.

Haruki found herself biting the tip of her pen. She still couldn’t believe she kissed her Math teacher just a few days ago. The mere memory of it sent her head reeling each time.

One way or another she knew it was bound to happen. They were secretly seeing each other after all. Still, it was her first time to be kissed, and to think it was by someone she wasn’t even supposed to be going out with...

Haruki flinched when the professor suddenly shifted his bespectacled gaze back at her. She immediately dropped her gaze back to her paper, lowering her head to hide the fluster on her cheeks.

Haruki closed her eyes and gripped her pen tight. She had to concentrate.

Twenty minutes later the bell finally rang. Students rose from their seats and started passing their papers. Haruki managed to finish in time as she grabbed her bag and followed the queue of students up front.

Haruki kept her gaze on her paper the whole time as she wordlessly passed her paper to the professor. She watched his large right hand receive her sheet.

“Miss Shinjo.”

Haruki almost jumped at the mention of her name. She finally looked up at the man. His expression in front of the other students gave away nothing as usual.

“I’d like to have a short word with you.”

Haruki uneasily watched the throng of students filing out behind her until the last person left the room.

“I’d like to meet with you in private later,” He instantly said before she could open her mouth to speak. “Are you free?”

She paused with her lips slightly parted before finally coming up with a sensible reply.

“Sure,” She cleared her throat. “Where?”

“I have a meeting until seven today,” he frowned. “Is it okay if I just drop by your place later?”

Haruki blinked and felt her mind go blank. “Um...”

“We could meet somewhere else.”

“Uh,” She bit her lower lip. There was nothing wrong with her teacher paying a visit in her apartment, right?

“It’s okay, I guess,” She found herself blurting.

“Great,” He faintly smiled. “I’ll see you later then.”

“Okay,” She feebly smiled back, suddenly wondering what in the world she had just gotten herself into when she left the room.

Haruki was unable to sit still on her bed later that evening.

It was twenty past seven when she glanced at the clock. She looked around her small apartment, wondering for the nth time if it looked clean enough.

She looked at the small table at the center of the room. There was a cookie tin from her mother’s package two days ago. The tea set was prepared in the kitchen. She seemed presentable enough when she looked at her reflection in the mirror. What else was she missing?

Haruki let out a small yelp of surprise when the doorbell rang. She walked to the door and paused a hand on the knob. Why was she such a nervous wreck?

Exhaling, Haruki finally opened the door. Her Algebra professor greeted her down the hallway, still in his suit from earlier that day.

“Hi,” She began, parting the door wider for his entrance. He stepped inside her apartment, his tall frame instantly engulfing her small room.

“I’m sorry, my place is really cramped,” She uneasily laughed as she watched him take off his shoes and place his coat and bag on a nearby chair.

“I’m just going to make some tea,” She headed for the kitchen. “Please make yourself comfortable.”

“Haruki,” He began, standing by the kitchen door. “What do you think of me?”

Haruki paused in transferring hot water to a teapot and turned to look at him. “What?”

Ryou slowly walked over to her until he stood inches away from her. “What do you think of me?”

“Um,” Haruki immediately turned around and stared at her teapot. “What kind of a question is that?”

Ryou placed a hand on the counter and leaned his body forward, cornering her in place. “I just want an answer.”

She felt a shiver run down her spine at the sound of his low voice in her ear. She removed her hands from the tea tray.

“We’ve been seeing each other for over a month,” He softly sighed. “I feel like you’re growing distant.”

“What? No,” She turned around, anxiously frowning. She saw the serious look in his eyes and found herself looking away again. “It’s not like that.”

“Then what is it?”

Haruki uneasily looked up at him again. His gaze was patient but expectant.

“I...” She nervously wrung her hands together. “It’s just that I’ve never had a boyfriend before, and...”

“You don’t trust me?”

“No!” She blurted out, inwardly wincing at how foolish she must’ve sounded. “I’m just... I’m just not used to this, I guess.”

She heard him sigh. She looked at him again, afraid that she had disappointed him, but he merely regarded her with a small smile.

“I guess being your teacher doesn’t help either, huh?” he murmured.

“It doesn’t,” She managed to smile.

“I don’t want us to stay this way, Haruki,” he said, putting a hand to her cheek. Her face felt so small in his palm. “I don’t want you to be afraid of me.”

“I’m not afraid of you,” she weakly answered.

“You don’t sound like it,” He softly chuckled as he neared his face to hers and whispered, “Prove it.”

Haruki looked up as he stood up straighter. He withdrew his hands from the counter and placed them on his sides, their bodies no longer touching.

Haruki willed herself with an inward sigh. She slowly reached a hand out and grasped his necktie, gently pulling him down to press her lips to his.

Her kiss was light but affectionate, breaking Ryou’s control as he parted her small mouth and kissed her back with greater intensity. He heard her moan and felt her hands gripping his sleeves, but he leaned her back against the counter, pinning his frame against hers as he wrapped an arm around her waist.

Despite his body’s urges, he fought to control himself. He couldn’t afford to scare her again. He kissed her slowly but passionately, trying to rouse her without intimidating her.

He finally felt her hands relax on his shoulders. He traveled his lips down to her neck, hearing her soft sigh as he tentatively placed a hand on the hem of her blouse and slowly lifted it, feeling her bare skin with his thumb. When she said nothing he slipped his entire hand up her top, gently stroking the side of her waist.

“Let’s move to the bed,” he murmured, taking her hand and guiding her back to the bedroom. He watched her flushed, uneasy face, but she remained silent as she settled on the bed next to him.

“You don’t want tea or anything...?” She suddenly asked in a small voice.

“No, I want you,” Ryou smirked, cupping her face and kissing her again. He gently pushed her back until she fell to the pillows. He paused and looked down on her.

“Does this make you uncomfortable?” he asked.

Haruki looked up at him. Her heart was throbbing in her temples, but she shook her head. He slowly lowered himself at her response, kissing her again and eliciting a low moan in her throat.

The lens hidden in the slit on Ryou’s suitcase captured the professor unbuttoning his sleeves as his student wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him deeper.
