Pioneer Day week is over. That means the end of spending four of the past six days working at community festivals, trying to let people know about the census. Well, on the bright side, at least the people who just come for the free stuff will have positive associations with the census, and if the swag is useful and they use it in the presence of others, maybe the low-level positive associations will spread... it may be moving a mountain with a teaspoon, but it's a start.

Sounds like it was an interesting week, if a busy and somewhat frustrating one.

That's the goal, and part of the reason why the Bureau sends us boxes and boxes of swag. But it's a slow and rather imperceptible process, especially as compared to some of the more concrete tasks I could be doing at the office.

(Another strategy we've been using is having kids trace their hands on a big piece of butcher paper (the census is "In Our Hands"), while getting a sentence or two in with the adults. I swear that some parents think we're child molesters.)
