Finally got my desktop up and sort-of running, and I'm amazed how much I've missed it. Laptops are great for browsing the web, but it's nice to have files going back a few years. Or seven. Or ten

It's kind of like when you set up the bookshelves in a new apartment, I guess. Not really moved in until, or whatever.
I can't directly relate, because every time I change computers (once, so far) the new hard drive is so much larger than the old that backing up everything previously takes only a small corner of it, so although my desktop is in storage in Albuquerque because I have not yet figured out what to do with it, I have all my files with me.
Or I thought I did, until a few weeks after my friend died, when I thought back to an essay I'd written in high school observing people's reactions to death, and wondering how insulting it would look reading it now. Apparently I didn't do as complete a backup of my parents' computer before going off to college as I thought I had, because I couldn't find it.
That's the trick. When I got my laptop, I still had a perfectly good desktop, which I kept running as an office machine/file server during the second year of my masters. So all my files ended up still on the desktop, even though most of my computer time was on the laptop.
Is the essay you mentioned one of those you submitted for TASP? If so, I may have a copy. (Schlepped around in hard-copy all these years, even....) Let me know, and I'll see if I can find it.
The road trip is delightful. Not another fair but a "windshield survey" of hard-to-count areas in the red-rock country. It's a plum assignment--four days driving around and getting a sense of the geography, with the gubmint footing the cost and paying me for my trouble. My only complaint is that I've had all too little chance to get out of the car, but hopefully a spot of canyoneering tomorrow will remedy that.
