you repeatedly do double-takes after reading sentences about Georgia...and mistakenly thinking of the South Caucasus, rather than the Southeast US.

Hee. But as to which case is more embarrassing, I'd say that's even more context-dependent than the case of mistaken identity itself...

Actually, the real context dependency is whether the mistaken identity comes in reading or in conversation. At least when one is reading, nobody else has to know.
