Is Obama already taking on a battle he can't win?

Make Hillary Secretary of State? Rescue the American car industry? Bail out the national banking system? Barack Obama may do all these things and more. But one thing he can't do: mess with college football.

Thus the shock waves when Obama, at the end of an otherwise uneventful debut interview as President-elect, suggested that college football might ( Read more... )

I think there are a lot of people who have suggested that before. The only reason I've heard against it is that there are too many teams, and they'd basically have to play year round to have a real playoff-style tourney. I don't know if that's true or not, but in the end I don't care one way or the other.

I didn't hear the comment (was he saying it as an official press-release? or just as an off-handed remark?) but I'm guessing he was just talking. I seriously hope he's not going to spend any time during his presidency on this. Or if he does, it had better be because he's solved world hunger, poverty, the economic crisis, the global climate crisis, the energy crisis, and ended all wars. Yanno, once we live in Utopia he can poke at College Football rules.

If Obama wants to meddle in sports let him figure out a way to shorten the hockey play off season! It is nearly as long as the regular season. Maybe it's just me, but I think the sport should be confined to actual WINTER months as it is a winter sport!!!

When NHL playoffs end, CFL starts. When CFL season ends, the NHL season has just started. It's nice to have sports go all year long.

The Obama College football story is headlines only because the media can't find in real dirt on the guy. They would rather there was a sex scandal or something that will sell papers.

Sadly very few people in America actually care about hockey.

It's just pre-inauguration banter that means nothing. I don't think Obama is going to get involved in how college football playoffs are structured, although he is entitled to an opinion about it. He has bigger fish to fry, so sports columnists really need to sit back down and get back to commenting on outrageous player salaries and citizens having to foot the bill for new sports arenas.

It's probably an opinion more than anything. Although my boyfriend would love to see it happen - he's been calling for it for years.
