Tanabata. It's a holiday that celebrates the meeting of two deities separated by the Milky Way that can only reach each other on July seventh.

You write your wish for the gods on a strip of rice paper, then tie it to a stick and set it adrift on a lantern at night. Some people just burn the paper around midnight, though.
