The opposite of love is not hate. The opposite of love is apathy.
Transparency. Silence and lack of eye contact speak volumes more than any sarcastic comment ever could.
One day life won't be such a hassle for you because you will have already broken the habit of living.

I can see that as true among people that are you peers. If your classmates/coworkers/whomever hate you, you can hate them back if you so choose, and that doesn't seem as bad as being completely ignored.
But what about, for example, the child/parent relationship? If a child is actively hated by his father, beaten, verbally abused, etc., I think that would be much more destructive to the child's mentality than being ignored and neglected.
Hate is specifically destructive; it is an active negative force.
Apathy, though it can be destructive, is not so progressive or intentional. It's just apathy.
