and Roxas’ storyline to date, here

Changes from canon, if AU: The changes so far are as thus: because of the style of onepassingnight , however, these changes are liable to twist and warp even more, as Roxas will be taken from the point given below:

Day 6 finds Roxas alone within the labs underneath the Mansion. After beating Axel and speaking with DiZ, he’s under the impression that he will truly disappear once connecting with Sora. However, once the connection begins, something twists. This is due to two major factors- Roxas gaining emotions at the beginning of the connection which cause their heart to fight any further merging, and Xehanort’s heartless still residing within Sora’s heart. The result, then, is that Roxas is simply pulled by that connection into the real Twilight Town, where he and Sora meet eye to eye for the first time.

It’s quickly established that Roxas himself is also a keyblade wielder, and his prior knowledge to Sora, Donald and Goofy’s names leads them to believe that he purposefully came to wake them. Due to these two facts, Roxas is allowed to tag along with the group as they make their way around Twilight Town, but even so, Donald remains wary of the sudden extra to their party, and doesn’t fail in showing it.

Roxas is as confused about his continued existence as Sora and company are by their surroundings. A fight breaks out before the Usual Spot, with Roxas refusing to enter, until Hayner, Pence and Olette intervene. Roxas fades into the background for the duration of this conversation, afraid of facing the people he had thought were his friends. He’s discomforted by the fact that all three seem fascinated with him, Hayner stomping off before Olette and Pence inform Sora, Donald and Goofy that they saw someone looking for the three, fitting the description of the king.

On their way to the station the group also meets with Seifer, who also seems to have some vague recognition of Roxas- going as far to say that simply looking at his face seems to ‘tick him off’. Roxas replies dryly that he supposes ‘it’s destiny’ before leading the group to the station, where they’re attacked by Nobodies. The monsters don't seems to differentiate between who they're fighting with, attacking all four with the same mindless strength. With the exhaustion of Day 6 behind him, Roxas falls alongside Sora. They are then saved by Mickey, who, despite giving Roxas some meaningful looks, doesn’t appear to have the time to pull him away from the others and hear out the situation. With a promised "later" directed at Roxas, he disappears, but not before prompting them to take a train from the station, using the same purse stolen from Roxas on Day 2-something Roxas quickly indentifies.

At this point, Roxas doesn’t assume that he’ll be welcome by the party much longer, and attempts to leave, wanting to find out why he’s still here, avoid Organization 13, and maybe continue his journey to find Kingdom Hearts. He’s stopped not only by Sora, but by Donald and Goofy as well, who seem to have taken Mickey’s orders as all four of them departing together. Sora’s reasoning as to why he doesn’t want Roxas to leave remains unstated, though it appears to be different to that of his friends. All four then depart to the Mysterious Tower- but not without Hayner, Pence and Olette coming to say goodbye, all three of whom are alarmed when both Roxas and Sora begin to cry.

The four arrive at the tower, meeting Pete along the way and informing him that Maleficent is toast. In return, they find the tower they have been sent to is home to the great Yen Sid, a Keyblade Master who once trained Mickey himself. Meeting with him, Yen Sid explains the state of the worlds at this point- and the various enemies they may face, including Organization 13. As Sora receives his new clothing, he takes Roxas aside, listening to his explanation as to why he’s still here, and simply stating that there may be a reason for his continued existence as his own individual being.

Further discussion with Yen Side leads Donald and Goody to the decision that travelling home would be their best option. It’s suggested that with Roxas as an inclusion to the equation, the group should be able to part ways for a time, allowing Sora to continue with his search for Riku whilst Donald and Goofy check up on their home. Though the parting is reluctant and saddening, Sora and Roxas continue their journey alone.

The night before they leave, the two begin to dream…

Personality:
Roxas is a Nobody, a being without a heart, but despite this he still seems perfectly capable of retaining emotions, and in turn, the habits and reactions they cause, such as gaining an emotional attachment to the time he spends each evening having ice cream with Axel and Xion. It gives a lot of character to Roxas that sets him apart from Sora, and also from other Nobodies in turn, since Nobodies seem to follow the character of their original self more often than not. When it comes to Roxas, he does have a completely different personality which isn’t based on time that’s passed.

In fact, when it comes down to it Roxas is strongly independent of Sora to the point where he rejects comparisons being made between them violently, stating quite often that “my heart belongs to me!” when others do bring this up. He takes this as far as attacking Sora in The World That Never Was, showing an intense resentment towards Sora and the Keyblade, only to be mollified once defeated.

Roxas often appears absent and aloof, and this seems to be largely due to the fact that he’s not sure how to engage to most situations, as proven by his hesitant response to Olette’s silent pleas for him to speak upon the first day in Twilight Town. Whilst he does understand the situation at hand, the best way to rectify it in a peaceable manner takes him several moments to formulate. He finds it easiest to respond to others in anger, an intense emotional reaction that does give an indication of perhaps not holding his own heart, but having emotions filter through him when they’re based upon the more extreme reactions.

Outside of these, Roxas appears to be quiet and distinctly calm. He’s not nearly as compulsive as Sora, and does tend to think about things before acting towards them. Whilst he’s still liable to help others, he has a greater sense of self preservation and a wariness towards other people that causes confliction with this hero styled influence, often only giving in because its, in the end, the ‘right’ path to follow.

His understanding of the world seems to revolve around his friends- their word is the end all of any debate, and he has been known to take their explanations far too seriously. He’s also liable to hurt others with rather blunt, honest information- not purposefully, but with a lack of understanding towards why being told certain things would hurt.

Its this lack of knowledge that drives Roxas. There’s a need there, to understand himself and the world around him, and that is the essence that drives his person.

In an AU perspective, the history around his and Sora’s relationship changes drastically, as does his outlook on what it means to be a Nobody, and more specifically, Sora’s Nobody. Whilst his personality from before remains the same, he then gets the chance for further development as he goes through various worlds with Sora, Donald and Goofy. A huge part of this is not only feeling his own emotions, but Sora’s as well.

From the point that Sora wakes, Roxas establishes a full connection to the emotions he’s been missing; and along their journey, he begins to understand not only the most graphic, but the subtle feelings that control and sway his mood and decisions. At the beginning, Roxas has to learn to control the anger and resentment he feels towards DiZ and Riku; this comes out in the fights- generally composed of ‘the silent treatment’- Sora and Roxas reserve for each other in the few months they travel alone.

Another immense change is his understanding of Sora. What anger he exhibited in The World That Never Was canonly is let out in smaller, easier to control doses, heavily tempered by the fact that he has a significant advantage in understanding Sora by feeling the emotions drawn between them. He comes to the realization quickly that Sora is just as innocent a party as himself, and in this way, allows himself to be drawn into a close friendship and affection for his other over the course of their adventures.

His existence, therefore, comes at a heavier price in his mind. The fact that he was created because Sora fell to the darkness sits heavily with him, and the prejudice exhibited by the side of light causes him to seriously question the complications caused by his creation and continuation as his own person.

Over time, Sora’s influence allows Roxas to become mellower, as it were. He becomes relaxed within himself, confident, and his periods of vivid negative emotions become less and less, dispersed with more frequent periods of cheer or just simple contentment. His attachment to Sora becomes that of a best friend and more- by the end of their journey to stop Organization 13, Roxas is heavily dependent on Sora as a constant in his life, and is willing to stop at nothing to protect the one person who hasn’t lied or used him in the short time he’s been around.

Whilst not in the same social mindset as Sora, Roxas also makes friends along their adventures, quite surprisingly, even of Riku. Because of this, his relationship with Axel during his time within the Organization is brought to sharper light, and his death to save both Roxas and Sora creates a devastating effect upon him.

All in all, he learns the concepts and ideas needed to allow him a further grasp of control and understanding about himself. Because of this, his willingness to help others grows, and establishes in him a more confident standing as a person and a keyblade wielder. He goes from the broken, tortured persona within the digital Twilight Town to a point where he has a true foundation of self and friends to stand on.

Abilities:
Roxas’ abilities when unhindered are rather extensive. His element is light, something he uses to great affect. To quote someone directly, Roxas’ attributes seem to equate to “he can move so fucking fast that you will never be able to hit him and he will brutally assault you as you taper off his twenty-two bars of health”. It’s a fairly apt description.

With his full powers, Roxas is lightening fast, and his light based moves are heavy pillars of burning white as well as large balls that home in on his opponent. Weapon wise, he uses two keyblades, Oathkeeper and Oblivion, or a singular Kingdom Key- weapons in a key shaped style with the power to lock and unlock anything, including hearts.

He also holds the same abilities as Sora; magic such as fire, cure, and other elemental styles, and physically Roxas puts up a constant offensive of rushing forward and pummeling his enemies, trailing after them until they’re defeated.

The twists brought on by the AU allow for other abilities, some not inherently offense or defense based. One of these is the connection with Sora, that allows them to share a general sense of what the other is feeling during spikes of intense emotion, and further down the track, more in-depth emotion in general. Their fighting styles also change to accommodate each other as a single unit, rather than fighting alone. Part of this is, of course, due to their own growing affection and protectiveness of the other, but a natural part of this occurs from that same simple base.

As a Nobody, he also retains his ability to use the dark corridors, though it’s a move unlikely to be used straight from the get go.

Writing sample:

Isabelline. White. He can’t particularly remember where he’s heard the word before; he just knows that in some way, he likes it. A soothing name for a soothing color, unbiased in its simplicity, and its always been a color, a shade, that he’s associated with peace.

It would make sense that the solace of his own dreams would retain that simplicity in a theme and style he could take comfort in.

The walls are a smooth, plain white. There’s a small possibility, the slightest chance that they’re glowing, but Roxas is hardly concentrating on them at all. Nor does he even want to, at certain points. Now and again, that blank calm flickers and collapses like a screen to a projector, scenes playing out over and over again before they burst into static, lingering well after they’ve faded away; A boy and his keyblade; an island in ruin; a familiar face controlled by an unfamiliar person…

So Roxas kept his eyes steadfastly down. These were things he had seen before; a dream within a dream, and he could taste the words falling from silent lips as each new image flickered to life, as every piece of static died. In his lap was a journal, and though there was no pen in his hand, words slowly spilled their way across the page, loops of ink formed by the bare existence of thought.

Roxas kept his eyes down. It was best to remain lost in the churning of his own thoughts than disappear into the abyss of Sora’s memories.
