Vegans are all the time trying to gross me out about meat, but strangely, I'm pretty relaxed about it. People touch it and make it dirty? Who cares? Cook it and it will all be good. Rats get thrown in with the cows at the slaughter house? Who cares? Rats are edible. Bugs get in? Whatever. In certain countries, people eat just the bugs. Germs? That's what we have immune systems for. Decomposing even after I've eaten it? Vegetables do as well. Besides, isn't digestion really just sped up decomposition?
The only thing that freaks me out is the idea of Mad Cow.
Prions are weird. I'm also banned from donating blood for life because I received blood products in Ireland between certain black listed dates. Feeding cows other cow parts was a bad idea. But, as you said, if they're using the same meat as found in grocery store, you're as likely to get mad cow from the grocery store meat.
I am banned for life from donating blood because of the possibility I have consumed Mad Cow. There's no test to see if I have it and there's no time limit by which, if no symptoms have presented themselves, I can be assumed to be risk free.
I lived in France in the mid 90's. I ate at the restaurant of a major fast food chain the day they found Mad Cow contaminated meat in Rome in 2001.
Ten+ years later, I have yet to start running around in circles until I collapse.
I was most annoyed when my sister needed blood. She refuses anonymous donations but they barred me from donating to her. She still lives in France. Odds are we both have it or we don't but not that one of us would give it to the other.
Oh and if you're getting sick after eating Taco Bell, it probably has less to do with the meat and where it's sourced and more to do with the fact that Larry has just jizzed into your taco salad and Barry is too lazy to wash the lettuce and Phil like to make your taco with no gloves on and Liz was too lazy to check the cheese sauce can otherwise she would have realised that it went out of date five years ago.
