022. Diamonds, Sungmin/Kibum

Sungmin was more than happy to be back on his home country, one because he missed the oh so familiar dialect, the air and the signs that he passed through each and every day and two because this is where his heart was, this was the place where he belonged, where he grew and where he had his heart broken. It was here, on this very country, on the very sea.

He didn’t know how he ended up being on the sea rather than the homey apartment he lived along with the other twelve members. They just got home from Japan and instead of spending time there he was drag by a flushed Kibum. He didn’t oppose to it, no, because he somehow wanted this too - he needed this - he needed to be away from the other even for a little more because he knew his heart wouldn’t be able to take it, to come home to the apartment without the one he’s been longing for.

“They’d been in China for three days now.”

Kibum’s words broke Sungmin’s trail of thoughts and the latter couldn’t help but smile because he knew Kibum heeded for him, mourned with him but most of all, sympathized him. Sungmin just nodded as if to tell Kibum that he knew this - of course he did because all the time he spent in Japan, he had been contemplating so hard, so deep, if he should call Siwon for the last time before he would fly to China with the rest - but of course he didn’t called. Sungmin was such a coward to do so.

Sungmin was once again pulled out of his thoughts when he felt that Kibum was closer to him now than before and the moment Sungmin raised his eyes, he saw how Kibum’s eyes were - they were hazy and it was like butterscotch. Sungmin didn’t know if it was like this all this time or was it just today?

Kibum, confident as he is since the day Sungmin and Siwon broke up, took his hyung’s hand in his and entwined their fingers and of course, Sungmin didn’t mind - or he pretended that he didn’t mind because it was Kibum, his band mate, his dongsaeng, his confidant.

“You know what makes me feel so melancholic in this place?” Sungmin said, his breath dissolving into a misty fog just right in front of him. “This is where Siwon and I broke up but I know this would also be the place where we would reconcile once again.”

“You still dream of being with him?”

“Of course I do, Kibum. We were meant to be together like missing puzzle pieces.”

Kibum saw that smile, the smile that Sungmin spared for Siwon and only for Siwon, he saw how the other’s eyes glimmer into the fading sunlight and he felt how Sungmin’s fingers tighten round Kibum’s and of course he knew that his hyung’s was thinking of Siwon. Kibum then smiled - bitterly, pure of melancholy and most of all regret.

He regretted this - taking a chance to ask Sungmin to date him, taking a chance to hold onto false hopes and most of all taking the chance to give his mother’s diamond ring. Kibum knew perfectly well, it wasn’t diamonds that would make his hyung happy - it was Siwon’s heart. His hyung had already stated it, hadn’t he? They were like puzzle pieces - one couldn’t be mended without the other and it was true and it wounded Kibum more than he deserved to.
