House hunting

Following our trip to Ely at the beginning of last week, we made an offer for the first house we looked at, which was big, fairly central and close to the station. The asking price was also towards the top end of our budget. And it had rather more stairs than I would really have liked. Keep an eye on the house you've just lost as well just in case it falls through. We got this place on a second bid and it was cheaper than the first one because the owners needed to move by a certain date.

There's a lot to be said for Plan A. We ended up in much the same position after renting the Gravesend house we wanted to buy (in Istead Rise as some may recall) in the hope that legal wrangles would resolve in due course. They didn't, and we had to give up on that house and find another. But whilst moving twice was a real pain, house-hunting is an awful lot easier if you're already living there. Plus of course having no chain is also a big plus.

Our current chain isn't very long, as our purchasers aren't selling anything. But having the cash available immediately would certainly put us in a very strong position, when another suitable property comes on the market.
