Why not start at least looking at other jobs now? If you're not happy in your job, it never does any harm to look out for other possibilities. Ideally, you should try to figure out what kind of job(s) would make you happier and work towards it/one of them. The book 'What Colour is Your Parachute?' comes highly recommended for doing that.
It's worth bearing in mind, of course, that if you've only been in a job a very short time before going on maternity leave, you're only entitled to six months, not the full year (see http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Parents/Moneyandworkentitlements/Parentalleaveandpay/DG_10029285). It's something to factor in when deciding whether to apply for J Random Dream Job...but, hey, if it's your dream job maybe you'd want to go back after 6 months

It's a familiar story; I've been through it and so have most of my mates. Not fun. Many, perhaps most employers care less about you as a person than about the work that they can wring out of you. I can see the sense in taking the bastards for every day of maternity pay you possibly can though; it's just turning the tables, really. Best of luck with the sprog-engenderment.
