Well, we're nearing the home stretch of the first month with the New Year's goals, and I think I'm doing ok.  On a mission to complete my least meaningful and most achievable goal, I had an exciting food foray today.  Whilst in the chilly north, one of my gracious hostess' friends suggested that my new veggie for the year ought to be a beet.  This

Kolya does love his beets... we all went grocery shopping in Kensington Market last Saturday and T. and I were making fun of him for stocking up on his weekly beet supply.

I also once threatened to write a children's book about him, "Kolya and the Recalcitrant Beet".

The book wouldn't be a terrible idea. You could have it be the first in a series of books that encourage children to try new veggies, with other editions discussing eggplant, spinach, broccoli, etc.

The only thing that stumps me is why Kolya would want to make them so often. Even if they are cheap and delicious (in his mind, certainly), they take forever to cook! Thus, they won't be added to the regular cooking rotation in this house.

Oh, and incidentally, our SoCal friend was rather disconcerted by the idea that he has a doppelganger, and seemed unwilling to believe the idea. Somehow, this makes the scenario more amusing.
