On NBC there is this news program called "Dateline" which has been running a sting operation they call "To catch a predator". On this show they use decoys posing at 13 year olds who talk to people (almost always men) in online chat rooms. A surprisingly large number of these men have sexually explicit conversations with these decoys and then ( Read more... )

Have you seen a movie called "Hard candy"? You should have a look at it. It is based on a similar plotline except that it the coup is not engineered by the cops ( ... )

do the pretend teenagers also talk like teenagers
The pretend teenagers do talk like teenagers. The people who are showcased in the show are usually 25 and older.

Will all the visits result in violent or forced sex?
I dont think this is important. An adult who has any kind of sex with a child, even if the child encourages the adult, should know better.

Would you subscribe to that?
If the show enticed people by posing as gay people, or enticed married men to cheat on their wives, I would find it (the show) objectionable. But these guys know they are chatting with someone who says she is 13 ..... however mature, I have never seen a 13 year old who was ready for consentual sex with a 30 year old man.

I think I have a problem with this kind of "entrapment" on a different level. People's sexual needs and desires are vast. Fantasy, to my mind, is an acceptable way to live out (in your head) desires. It is the translation to reality that can be a problem ( ... )

When is a child no more a child ? That is an interesting question. At 15/16 the lines begin to blur .... but at 13 I think a human being who grows up in our society can still be called a child. To reach that conclusion I went over all the 13 year olds I have known ...... classmates and juniors in school. Were they still "children" only because their parents did not prepare them to take on adult responsibilities at that age ? Maybe. We all know elders in our families who were married at 13 ..... their perspective would be very interesting I think. I will talk to my grandmom when I see her next. She looks very young in the wedding picture .... not sure how old she really was.

It's standard practice... chaibacca October 10 2006, 00:38:11 UTC
"Sting" operations like this are common among American law enforcement. It's used at least as frequently in the narcotics realm. I was watching an episode of "COPS" a number of years back, covering activities in Las Vegas. It showed an undercover cop sell someone a bag of pot on the street, and then immediately arrest them for possession of narcotics. I couldn't believe it ( ... )

They create a perpetrator where there might not have otherwise been one ....... for the overall benefit (hopefully) of society

I agree .... It would be better if they went after known criminals this way, but hopefully publicising the results of living out one's fantasy deters more people from trying to do the same.

From body language, 3 out of the 4 Indians I saw on TV looked like they were just realising the gravity of what they would have (maybe) done. Their pleas of innocence were just embarassing. But then again, I know so many stories of uncles/cousins who molest children in Indian families that I must wonder if these guys would not someday have played out their fantasies anyway.
