Oh, it was the kid. It looked like he got out all right as well. Not that Squall was worried or anything. Onion Knight was young and he talked too much, but he was also more than capable of taking care of himself.
"And you look fine too, Onion Knight," he replied.
Sometimes, he wished the kid would just tell him his goddamn name.
I'll point my sword at whoever I like!not_for_cookingOctober 12 2011, 05:13:16 UTC
Onion Knight was about to respond when something Squall said struck him as really odd. Everyone else he'd met in the war and seen in Vatheon had forgotten him. The fact Squall knew his 'name'...
He couldn't keep the surprise off his face. "Wait... you remember?"
And poke someone's eye outrequiem_grieverOctober 12 2011, 05:31:01 UTC
"Remember what?" Squall asked, unable to understand why Onion Knight was staring at him like that.
Squall had always wondered during the conflict if he'd be able to keep the memories that had been formed there once he left. It seemed the answer to that was yes, and as terrible as the War of the Gods was, he was happy for it.
They didn't need that eye anyway!not_for_cookingOctober 13 2011, 03:50:50 UTC
Shoot, he shouldn't have said anything! His worries when people in Vatheon that he had met during the War didn't remember him seemed so... silly now that Squall (who remembered him!) had arrived. Onion Knight quickly attempted to wave off Squall's line of questioning.
"N-never mind! It's nothing!" Maybe he could distract Squall from asking further by his own questions..? "When did you arrive?"
...yes. Yes they did.requiem_grieverOctober 13 2011, 04:07:56 UTC
Nothing. Like Squall was going to believe that. He knew the kid well enough to know that something was up. He wouldn't let Onion Knight avoid the question so easily. He was used to tactics like these. Most people he knew had tried to pull this on him at least once.
"A couple days ago," he answered. And if Onion Knight thought he was off the hook, he wasn't. "So what's this thing I remember?"
... Well, now they're eligible for an Eye Patch of Powernot_for_cookingOctober 13 2011, 17:47:38 UTC
asdf;lkj no, Onion Knight wasn't going to be telling so easily! This was so stupid. It wasn't as if someone like Squall would understand being forgotten. Besides, his fears seemed so silly in retrospect. Completely unbefitting of a knight!
it better be a damn good eyepatchrequiem_grieverOctober 13 2011, 18:01:05 UTC
Oh. So Onion Knight wanted to play that game, did he? Unluckily for him, Squall was very good at it. He stared right down at the kid and used the Commander Voice, the one that he had started using once he was appointed the Commander of Balamb Garden. It told people he meant business and his tolerance for bullshit was somewhere near the zero range.
"If it's nothing, then you have no problem telling me."
Gosh, do you really think I would give you a sub-par eyepatch? I'M HURTnot_for_cookingOctober 13 2011, 18:11:49 UTC
Squall why are you giving Onion Knight that look stop that aaaaaaaaaaaaaa. Nope, there was no way he could hold that stare from Squall, so Onion Knight looked away, clearly uncomfortable. Besides, he couldn't argue with that logic.
Reluctantly, he said, "Some of the others from the War..." Maybe Squall wouldn't laugh; he wasn't like Zidane or Bartz. Onion Knight looked back at Squall. "When I met them here, they didn't remember me."
I care not for your hurt feelingsrequiem_grieverOctober 13 2011, 18:28:06 UTC
Upon hearing that, Squall let his expression soften. What Onion Knight said told him a lot of things. Others were here, and if they didn't remember him, they wouldn't remember Squall either. Guardian Forces, the War, now Vatheon. Everything seemed to like messing with memories.
"I see," he said. "I wouldn't call that 'nothing.'" He crossed his arms. "So you were surprised that I remembered you."
I never -make- you do things; I just ask nicely!not_for_cookingOctober 14 2011, 03:41:08 UTC
Thanks a lot, Squall! Nice to know you cared so much.
But, despite the less than flattering words, Onion Knight did appreciate them. They were... reassuring. Nevertheless, he'd prefer to get away from this topic.
Looking up at where the kraken lay resting, Onion Knight asked, "So... do you have any ideas?"
you leer at me until I do themrequiem_grieverOctober 14 2011, 03:57:16 UTC
That thing. That thing that Squall had been thinking about earlier. He was no stranger to coming up with plans of attack, but no matter how he looked at the situation, their hands were tied. They had no way to engage the kraken and even if they did, they didn't have the power to do any significant damage to it.
"There's no way we're going to fight that thing off," he said. It had attacked with its tentacles while its main body was safely outside the barrier, and it had the intelligence to withdraw to a safe place once the limbs had started taking too much damage. There was nothing stopping it from just repeating this process until it eventually won. "So we can't do anything, unless there's a way to get rid of it that doesn't involve fighting."
Me? Use Leer? Never. I can't help it if your defences are down!not_for_cookingOctober 15 2011, 14:02:54 UTC
Onion Knight listened to Squall's words intently. Although he wouldn't admit it aloud, he had some measure of respect for him. Certainly not quite on the same level as certain knights, but enough to keep an active interest in what Squall had to say.
Which was pretty much the same as the conclusion Onion Knight had reached himself. Onion Knight shifted his stance and looked back at Squall. "There's a lot of weird stuff here, and weird things apparently happen all the time."
Fuuka had warned him about the 'curses', and he'd been on the receiving end of one. It sounded like they were normal in Vatheon. Onion Knight looked back up at the kraken before he continued, "I can't tell if it's normal for an invasion like this or not."
Normal. Squall resisted the urge to snort. Nothing about this place was normal as far as he could tell. Maybe he should just start expecting insane crazy stuff to happen all the time now.
"Soon enough, I'm going to start forgetting what normal even is," he said. "We'll just have to wait and find out."
So when Onion Knight caught sight of Squall, he approached. It was hard to keep his relief from his voice, but he tried, anyway. "You're alright!"

How had it taken him this long to realise this?

Memory was kind of a touchy subject with him.
