Cotton is too period. A book you may be interested in finding is "The Italian Cotton Industry in the Later Middle Ages 1100-1600", by Maureen Fennell Mazzaoui. I've also seen references to cotton doublets being made from Rouen cotton in some Spanish inventories pre-1600. So there :-P But horray for dying experiments working!
I second that. Cotton is period, and the ancient Egyptians had it. Bess had a 'callicoe' dress.......cotton from Calcutta India was well in reknown and the Europeans called it Calicoe-Anglicized Calcutta.
I guess I had a brain fart... but I seem to recall cotton being rare even in Rome during the empire/republic time frame. . . Maybe I'm just misremembering.
