For the longest time, I thought "Disorder" by Joy Division was about gay. Listen to the lyrics... I always thought it was "I've been waiting for a guy to come and take me by the hand/ Unknown sensations make me feel the pleasures of another man." It made me like the song that much more ( Read more... )

I’ve been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand,
Could these sensations make me feel the pleasures of a normal man?
These sensations barely interest me for another day,
I’ve got the spirit, lose the feeling, take the shock away.

It’s getting faster, moving faster now, it’s getting out of hand,
On the tenth floor, down the back stairs, it’s a no man’s land,
Lights are flashing, cars are crashing, getting frequent now,
I’ve got the spirit, lose the feeling, let it out somehow.

What means to you, what means to me, and we will meet again,
I’m watching you, I’m watching her, I’ll take no pity from your friends,
Who is right, who can tell, and who gives a damn right now,
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold, then you know,
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold, then you know,
Until the spirit new sensation takes hold, then you know,
I’ve got the spirit, but lose the feeling,
I’ve got the spirit, but lose the feeling,
Feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling, feeling.I've always associated it as an ( ... )

Yeah... after the song straightened up a little for me (I seriously did think it was about the pain of being conflicted over gay feelings in 1970s England for a while), I thought it was just about depression, too. Your interpretation is probably right, about releasing the spirit.
As far as the other one, that sounds likely as well.
But the first one makes a lot of sense with the song, how it has that sad bass line and overall sad sound, yet the riff is so happy and forward-looking.

hehe, Ian Curtis was married. (And has a Daughter, who is pretty attractive and does photography btw!)

You should bug 23chao5, I leant him what I had of my Joy Division stuff. :) There's an album with demos called Warsaw and has some excellent tracks on it. :)

I've been amazed, many times, at how Joy Division functioned. Because Curtis' writing hits very close to my mentality on several things, which is really difficult to do at times. He reminds me a lot of E.E. Cummings for some reason. :) I've been wanting to purchase copies of Unknown Pleasures and Closer on vinyl and frame them... Which is rare for any group I really like. But I think it's probably because Joy Division only put out two "official" albums, so it's easier. ;)

I know he liked girls, but did not know he was married. However, David Bowie's married. It doesn't mean shit.

I'll have to check out the daughter. What's her first name?

It took me a long while to appreciate Joy Division. "Atmosphere" was my soundtrack of late summer before 9th grade, and "24 Hours" worked for me junior year of highschool, but until last year, really, they were that band that I should by all means like but just didn't flip my switch. It took me a long time to get over the bareness of their instrumentation and the voice.
Although, right before college I did find an early version of "Ceremony," which still kicks my ass, hard.

Wow, yeah it has been a long time since you posted. Good to know you're still kickin'. I was a little worried.

And I would like to point out that I've never asked you any of the questions listed above. (We're not going to address the fact that I'm not at Kenyon this year...)

Post more - I like to know, or at least try to figure out, what's going on.

Thanks, I'll try to keep you posted. Although, as you've noticed (or at least, as benthic has noticed) I'm not that fascinating, especially from a distance. Most of what I do with my life is sight gags.

I've responded to your posts like 3 times over the past month or so. But I could be doing that from beyond the grave?
PA-THETIC.

I did like your hair swings, by the way.
