Any Simple Brown Rice Recipes?

Mar 23, 2011 12:56

Hey everyone! This is my first post to the group :)

So, since becoming a vegetarian almost 3 years ago, I still have yet to learn how to really cook and mostly rely on frozen entrees and vegetarian junk food. And it seems like every time I vow to start eating more wholesome food, I pick up a bag or box of brown rice.  And proceed to never cook it. ( Read more... )

Soy sauce is the easiest way to add a little flavor to rice (brown or white). I like to sprinkle on some black sesame seed as well.

That sounds really good! I haven't tried putting sesame seeds in it before, I'm definitely going to try that :) And I can't believe I forgot about soy sauce! I will have to buy some ^_^

You can get some sprinkle spices for rice at an Asian store. We love them!
Sorry, but most of my rice recipes are kinda long :(
Of course, there's always fried rice....

Oooo that sounds really good. I might get some Amy's canned chili to mix it in. One of my new years resolutions is to learn to make vegan chili, but first I wanna get rid of all this extra rice :D

You can use canned black beans, too. Add some chili powder and/or cumin to make it a little spicier, if you want.

I am a huge wimp when it comes to spiciness, but I'll try it ^_^ I can always add just a little at first I guess :)

Soy sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, and some red chili flakes. Or butter, pepper, garlic powder, cumin, and cilantro. Or butter, lemon juice, and thyme or basil.

Just try adding different seasonings and see what you like.

Yay! Those were the kind of combinations I was looking for. I get so confused about spices that I tend to mix together things that end up tasting really weird. Thanks so much :D

I do that too. It's usually when I'm craving a dozen different types of food, and the mix of spices sounds good in my head. But once it gets in the bowl... yeah. lol

Cook with coconut milk, lime juice and a couple of cinnamon sticks.

Cool! I've always wanted to buy coconut milk when I see it at the store but then I don't know what I'd do with it. Now I have something to try :D

I am going to try this tomorrow night and I realized - do you mean to grate the cinnamon sticks over the rice after it's cooked, or just stick them in there for looks? Whole cinnamon sticks confuse me... ^_^

I usually put in the whole cinnamon stick (or two) while the rice is cooking. Then remove or leave in for decoration.

Try this Vegetarian Times recipe for starters:
