It looks idyllic - until you think about what life was actually like, as you have pointed out.

I can absolutely understand the call of the mountains - for me it is the sea. And I feel closer to my mother's family, not just because I grew up physically closer to them than my father's family, but for that very reason that you do to your father's - knowing the oral history and the family stories.

I have always lived near water and can’t imagine not living with a large water body near by. I grew up on the Atlantic coast and now live near the Gulf of Mexico. There is something very calming about being by the water and listening to the waves.

My mother’s father died when she was very young (13). My grandmother remarried when I was 2, and her new husband was jealous of any mention of my grandfather or his family, so those connections were lost and no one talked about that side of the family. He was also just mean, so I didn’t want to spend time with them.
