lack of self-esteem. no risk in losing a guy who is beneath you.

I, too, believe it has to with a certain lack of self-esteem. I've known beautiful women who were with "beneath" them men in order not to deal with themselves. Being considered beautiful comes with its own problems- it can feel like such an ideal to live up to- that being with someone who is "less" than yourself can make you feel like a better person, sometimes without even being aware of it.
