Linguistic flags

I recently noticed something interesting.

I saw this flag in Jessica Simpson's newest video. (Horrendous, by the way. A blond Daisy Duke? I'm not even a fan and I'm appalled.)

Dammit!

My "accent," if I have one, comes from:

18 years on Long Island, NY
4 years in central New York
1.5 nonconsecutive years in central Massachusetts
1 year in southern New Hampshire
1 year in Boston itself
1 year in northeastern Massachusetts

I think the largest influence comes from Central NY, because people often tell me I sound Canadian -- and the accents are quite similar.

But it's "soda," not "pop," dammit, "pop" is what you do to a balloon.

Hahahaha.

You always respond so promptly to the posts I make at 3 and 4 AM. Am I your pre-work entertainment?

More Massachusetts talk that grates on my nerves:

They're "sprinkles," not "jimmies."
It's a "water fountain," not a "bubbler."
It's a "garbage can," not a "barrel."
It's "soda," not "tonic."

I had no idea Massachusettsians said "bubbler" also. I thought it was strictly confined to Michigan (or wherever it is they say strange things like that).

A barrel is what you put beer in.

I stopped to think that I should've not done this poll, but then I pressed the Submit button anyway.

Here's a little factoid for ya- I went to Robert E. Lee high school and we had a huge "rebel" flag hanging outside on the building as well as inside. We brought it to all the football games, etc. When I was in 11th grade there was a huge up-roar about the flag due to some sudden complaints by minority students. In the end they made us take the flag down and someone designed an alternative, politically-correct flag to use instead. The school is still named after the Confederate general, although strangely enough, since I graduated they turned the school into the "fine arts" high school ( ... )

Dude, I have never met a Texan with a stereotypical Texan accent.

And sprinkles/jimmies are the little candy bits you put on top of ice cream.

Behold

I know what tubing is! Maybe those people you talked to never lived next to a river. Or don't go outside.
