[x] The True Story of Matilda Sweetfuck - A few scattered VVC recs: Bright Star (Bright Star) by kiki_miserychic I absolutely love the editing in the first half of this vid -- the metronomical cutting and the repeated clips are really evocative. Totally fresh. Come On (Firefly) by charmax Y'all, it is still possible to make a Firefly vid that looks fresh! And the visuals are full of such movement that it's pretty impossible for me not to bop along. Crawling Back to You (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) by radixiscat (Will update with link once the vidder posts it online. Goddamnit, radixiscat!) Listen, the Cowboys vidshow was supposed to help me recover from the crying jag that Dreams sent me into. Then this vid happened. (And then destina's Brokeback Mountain vid happened but I'm not even going to talk about that one. Ow.) Anyway, radixiscat's vid is gorgeous, and it made me realize that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid should really be on my list of favorite movies. I love them SO MUCH. I also choose to read this vid as an AU where most things [they] worry about never happen anyway. Anyone who claims differently will get a glare. Dance Dreams (Tron: Legacy) by bradcpu I've never had any desire to see the Tron movies (and still don't) but now I really don't need to -- all the beautiful visuals are here in condensed form. So pretty! Also, bradcpu's editing is so smooth it blows my mind a little. Human (Iron Man) by barkley and destina This vid is SO GORGEOUS. Tony Stark, I love you. I love your stupid face. Hook Shot (Multi) by kuwdora I enjoy a good girls kick ass multifandom vid as much as the next person, but I think the use of movie source (including more obscure films) does something really interesting and different for this vid. It becomes less of a spot the fandom vid and more focused on ass-kicking for the sake of ass-kicking. Which I dig. Combined with the sharp editing, I could watch this vid on repeat for a long, long while. Music Again (The Karate Kid movies) by f1renze This vid made me cry in the Totally Rad vidshow, no lie. I was sitting there going OMG HE MAKES HIM WANT TO LISTEN TO MUSIC AGAAAIN and tearing up. (We'll keep blaming Dreams for this.) The rest of you will probably... not cry. However, it remains an awesome vid. Miyagi! I also really loved both of cappylicious's premiering Merlin vids this year. (I'll link them here when they're posted.) I've been enjoying the show still, but I've been frustrated at some of the storylines that have been stagnating or getting shortchanged in the past couple of seasons. cappylicious has some sort of magical ability to vid the show I've been wanting to watch, rather than the one that exists, and it makes me really happy.

[x] [some kind of title] - Vid Rec: Epic Multi Fassbender: Blood, Tears & Gold by kuwdora* Multi-fandom. Michael Fassbender. Lord King Bad Vid. He is ridiculous. You're welcome. (Possibly the only time in my life that I will say to someone: I think he was evil twins who licked feet in that. Thank you, kuwdora.) *Award for best use of dramatic tray-flinging in a video.

[x] lola | Vid Rec: In honor of the season premiere of Damages, even if I haven't seen it yet... kiki_miserychic's study of Ray Fiske's arc. This vid is so lyrical and heartbreaking. Seriously, this is why I love vidding, right here. Every unexpected but pitch perfect cut or movement; this vid pulls you along and pulls you in. Even if you haven't watched Damages (and don't mind being spoiled for earlier seasons... so in other words, if you weren't planning on watching Damages. Though you should really watch Damages, because it is such an unsung amazing show.) But anyway, what I'm trying to say is, watch this vid. eta: In rewatching, I think it's the pacing and rhythm of the edits that gets to me, and the way the argument builds through this release of images with the piano. It's like the argument unfolds, and makes absolute sense as a reading of Ray, and yet also feels unexpected at the same time because of the way it's paced to keep you waiting for more. My favorite moment may be the cut to Frobisher at the race track; Frobisher truly was Ray's downfall, but then perhaps really Ray was Ray's downfall.

[x] I love you. Let's gather firewood. - our book won't close: OH MY GOD, WHY HAVE I SEEN NOBODY FLAILING WITH GLEE OVER astartexx's NEW X-FILES VID YET?! I have seriously fantasized about her making more XF fanvids, longed for more of them, but I assumed she was probably done with this fandom. NEVER HAVE I BEEN MORE DELIGHTED TO BE WRONG IN MY LIFE. It was pure luck that I decided to check back with her journal again today, only four days after she posted the new vid. Me being me, and having no sense of social networking, it could have been months before I learned she'd made another XF vid. Anyway, it's called Matches to Paper Dolls, and it's glorious. It's strongly Scullycentric, and angsty, and beautiful, and complex. You could perhaps call it the darker half of Clear the Area, as well as a more serious branch off of her other Scully vid, Move. It is an intense exploration of Scully's attachment to the work, and to Mulder, and all the things that go with that attachment - the reasons for it, the nature of it, and the cost. I'm pretty sure I've been yearning for this vid about as long as I've been an x-phile. Now that it exists it's a little hard to remember what I wanted before, but I think it must have been a heck of a lot like this. I've only watched it once and haven't even looked up the lyrics to the track yet, but it's made me so happy that I don't want to wait to 'sober up' before posting about it. Our fandom has another wonderful fanvid among its numbers! Hooray! There really aren't that many (when you discount the seemingly endless shippy trifles on youtube) and it's not every day we get something new and well made, with a challenging music track and a strong concept.

[x] jetpack_monkey | Vividcon Recs: More of Them (Part 2 of 2): Get this Party Started (Leverage & White Collar) by rhoboat  - Shirley Bassey + Leverage + White Collar = Win. Dance Dreams (TRON: Legacy) by bradcpu - I didn't like TRON: Legacy that much. But I may like it more for this vid. Such a visual tour-de-force. Whenever, Wherever (Twilight) by obsessive24  - Yes I'm reccing a Twilight vid. It's a completely adorable Edward/Jacob slash thing. Friday (Brazil) by millylicious - It may be Rebecca Black's Friday, but it's also Terry Gilliam's Brazil. Such a perfect encapsulation of the crapsack that is Sam Lowry's life. Motown Philly (Psych) by jarrow  - If you ever forgot how ridiculously physical Psych is... this vid will remind you. Human (Iron Man) by barkley and destina  - God I wish I made this. I wish I knew how to begin making something like this. Gotta Boyfriend? (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World) by cherryice  - I thought Scott Pilgrim was nigh-unviddable (because much of it already looks like a vid in a lot of ways), but I've been proven wrong. I love this film and I love this vid. Planetary (Go!) (BSG) by cee_m - An entire civilization forced to drive forward because they don't have a choice. But man, can you dance to it. Sabotage (Misfits) by millylicious - I just started watching this show with echan  and, let me just say this: such a perfect expression of the crazy. * Debauchery in the UK (Lord Byron) by mresundance  - So awesome. Lord Byron really was a rock star. Some great movement in this one. One of my favorites out of the whole con. Thorn in My Heart (Damo) by laurashapiro  -  A very cool, layered vid based on a K-Drama I'd never heard of. Swordfights and romance! Land of Confusion (V - original flavor) by barkley and destina - I really need to finish watching V, because there's so much in this vid I want to experience. The occupation and revolution set to rock'n'roll. A View to a Kill (Crying Freeman) by franzeska  - I love this Bond theme (it's so much better than the movie it's attached to). Here it's used to illustrate a low-budget 90s action film which is (apparently) a bit ridiculous. I smiled a lot. I Swear (Smallville) by dualbunny , sweetestdrain , greensilver  - OMG THE CRACK. I want to write fic set in this bizarro universe. And I didn't even watch Smallville. * Crawling Back to You (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) by Radixiscat - A very sweet story about two doomed men who love each other very much. (I haven't seen this posted online anywhere yet). Hook Shot (multi) by kuwdora  - I love how this opens with a shot of Kuwdora's iTunes. It says everything we need to know up front:  this is her mental movie playlist of awesome kickass women. I can't really argue with that. I Wanna Go (Angelina Jolie) by millylicious  - A kinetic adoration of all things Angelina Jolie. Music Again by f1renze - Mr. Miyagi and Daniel-san complete each other. Very well put together.

[x] facetofcathy | Both Sides (Then and) Now: Then I Met You (26 words) by diannelamerc Fandom: Star Trek (2009) Rating: General Audiences Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply Relationships: James T. Kirk/Spock Characters: James T. Kirk, Spock Summary: An homage to the oldest style using the newest footage: The beginning of a beautiful friendship in 71 frames. The vid is a fabulous recreation of the old technique of setting a slideshow to music. For you youngsters out there, the sounds in the background on the vid are the noises a slide projector makes as it advances to each slide. (Click through to the AO3 for the embed--the password is provided) I'm sure lots of you know all this, so forgive the 'splaining, but I don't want to assume everyone knows the history. The most famous slideshow from the days before there was vidding is Kandy Fong's Both Sides Now, made with stills from Star Trek and set to Leonard Nimoy's recording of the titular song. It's the only pre-digital slideshow I know of that you can still watch.

[x] Howling at the Sky - Day 4 of the vidding meme & a vid rec: Right Where You Wanted Me by china_shop - this is a White Collar vid that is one of the most adorable things I've ever seen. She says in her notes that I provided beta input, but mostly that was a series of high-pitched squeaking noises, and I don't even watch the show. It's a PERFECT song and she edits it marvelously. The mirrored movements are my favorite part, but there is so many fun things to watch.

[x] You are guests in my corn! - John John John the bass player John from Hard Core Logo: I just wanted to post and say that sdwolfpup just posted a new John Oxenberger vid and it is gorgeous: A Bad Dream (Hard Core Logo) There are quite a few Joe/Billy vids in the world and I have seen and loved a lot of them, but let's be real, there is only 97 minutes of source and after a while, it all starts to feel a little repetitive. Which is only one of the many things that make this vid so fantastic: the opportunity to literally see the story from a completely different point of view than many of us are probably used to doing. I have seen this movie dozens of times and yet there are still scenes and moments here that look completely fresh, seeing them from John's perspective. I also think that of all the sad stories in this movie, John's is the saddest, and the way SDW gives him a voice here is a gorgeous tribute to a wonderful character caught in the crossfire of a shitty situation. It's brilliant, and beautiful, and heartbreaking, and you should go watch it! (It's also spoilery for the movie, though not as spoilery as it could be.)

[x] What's the point of a revolution without general copulation? - Oh my god, it really exists: Some beautiful, saintly person has posted an XMFC trailer that includes - wait for it - the Fassbender cross-dressing scene that was deleted from the final movie. No, seriously. It's at the 4:00 mark. I will forever mourn the loss. And if that scene doesn't appear on the DVD, I will run amok.

[x] underline everything - Braindump: 3) Ponies! I have basically thrown this at everyone who might be interested on Twitter already, but just in case, Twilight Sparkle's doing science and she's still alive! Hee! I admit I often am not taken by the lip syncing style of animated vidding, but I really love this one. I really do love them all, but Twilight is probably my most consistent favorite, largely because she's the only one who might legitimately run the world.

[x] I Suddenly Remembered My Charlemagne - And in better news, some vid recs: I realized that I never actually posted the rec for that Game of Thrones vid I talked about when I explained why I sat down and watched the show over the weekend. So here's the rec. The song is Thistle And Weeds which I had never heard, by Mumford and Sons, which I'd only heard of because of the Lion song. Anyway, the first 20 seconds of the vid was enough to make me watch the show. It's really that good. The vid focuses primarily on Dany and her various relationships. It pulls no punches. Literally. But the song encompasses Dany's determination and the path she takes to find her power, which was something I adored in the series itself. I also really, really liked the editing (which I won't spoil for you), and the song is a wonderful kind of understatedly epic that makes me wonder why no one ever pointed me at Mumford and Son's before. Thistle and Weeds: Fire cannot kill the dragon. ++ In a COMPLETELY different direction, we have the ADORABLE PONDS from Eleventy!Who, in a vid called You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate , which pretty much tells you everything you need to know. The song and clip choices complement one another perfectly, and the tone of the vid is spot on with the series itself. You Told The Drunks I Knew Karate: Oh, Ponds. ++ This next vid was the intro , and it might just be the day I'm having, but I totally cried. FANDOM, you guys! AND VIDDING! *hugs everyone* Intro Vid 2011: Welcome all ++ This next vid covers a whopping SEVENTEEN YEARS (some of which overlap, but still) of footage. All Stargate, all the time (and it says something about the Ancients that I agree with...I think!). High Voltage ++ There is not enough How To Train Your Dragon out there. Just sayin'. Roll With the Changes

[x] Just Because - Vividcon 2011: For 10 Years… (Intro Vid) - dualbunny made a really great vid introducing the con and the premiere vids and it was just a great thing for a newbie like me. I loved it. You Told the Drunks I Knew Karate by settiai has been recced by so many people, but that’s okay. It deserves it. It’s such a wonderful Rory character study and the song couldn’t be more perfect for the story it tells. Lost Girl: Character Primer by hellpenguin was such a fun vid that I have to know more about these characters and this show. House by the Sea by jarrow was one of my favorite vids of the entire weekend. I have never seen Blood and Sand, but now I kind of want to. The vid is just gorgeous and heartbreaking and still has me thinking about it and wanting to rewatch it even now, days later. Roll with the Changes by fan_eunice is another vid to a source I’ve never seen (How to Train Your Dragon), but I loved it. It made me want to jump up and cheer. Don’t Forget Me by obsessive24 is a character study of Riley Finn from Buffy that just made me ache for him. I liked Riley, but now I feel like I understand Riley. High Voltage by kuwdora is a pretty awesome “character study” of the Ancients and the way they totally screwed with and screwed humanity in at least three galaxies. Thistle and Weeds by sisabet is another vid that has been recced many times, but, again, it deserves it. Along with House by the Sea, it was one of my top favorites of the con. So beautiful and such a clearly told story of a girl growing up and becoming a strong and independent woman and it’s from such a problematic source, but the video is just so powerful. One Foot Wrong by dualbunny is yet another amazing character study, melding the four disparate aspects of the very complex Catwoman as portrayed by Michelle Pfeifer in Batman Returns. Who wouldn’t fall in love with her? Land of Confusion by barkley and destina is a kickass vid for the original V. When the old hand guides the young in painting “V” for victory on the wall, it sent chills down my spine. Shivery good vid! I Swear by dualbunny, greensilver, and sweetestdrain is rightly known as the vid that broke Vividcon. I laughed so hard for so long that I hurt all over. Smallville as it never was! Or is that always was, but TPTB never realized it? Kryptonite unicorns, people! And kittens! Every time I thought it can’t get any more over the top, these three vidders proved me wrong. Every time!

[x] I brake for Llamas - Vid Rec: While doing some research, I came across this really good XF vid. Now, I know it's been years, but ascian3 and I made a bunch of vids and thanks to that I've become very picky on vids I like - know it's hard, but if you can't find the beat, or have someone nearby to find it for you, maybe vidding isn't the thing for you. This is one of the best ones I've seen in a while. [embed]
