Blue Fucking Eagles

I don't think I'd want to stay in my university much longer.

I'm studying Law, yet we have a Theology subject?  To make matters worse, their prim, snotty-nosed, self-righteous thinking is REALLY getting on my nerves.  For example...

Honestly, you're surprised that you have to pray before and after class at a Catholic school? Seriously?

A professor told us that there's something fundamentally wrong with people who masturbate. And he is considered to be one of the best professors in the University. Imagine that.

Is he a priest or in any way a member of the clergy? Brother? Deacon? Clergymen are pretty much required to give the church's beliefs in their "preachings," even in school. I thought professors were allowed to say other things, but I could be mistaken.

Wait, I could have sworn you were American...are you not? And are you a guy or a girl? I thought you were a girl...I'm confused, darn these gender-vague screennames...

Oh, of course I expected to do some praying... just not that often. You see, our classes are bunched up together. You pray before a professor leaves, and just right after that professor leaves, a new professor comes in and then you have to pray all over again! It's ridiculous (and phony), I think.

Honestly, I have nothing about religions nor Catholics. I used to be one, after all. Come to think of it, I think I still am, though I'm in the "not practicing category."

Also, I expect men of the Church to have rather conservative views. I expect them to be anti-abortion, anti-divorce, anti-pre-marital sex, etc. But masturbation? Come on, what century are we anyways? :)

---> Oh, and yes, I'm a girl. And nope, not American either.
---> On another note, since I'm not American, I can't quite understand the Damon Wayans(?) - H/Hr reference in your icon. Please, care to explain?

I'm sorry. I know it sucks having to explain a joke, but there you go. *blushes* ^.^

The Icon is Kanye West. During a national telethon(hopefully you know what those are) to raise money for Hurricane Katrina victims, he made this really cool speech about donating money and time, and ended it with "George Bush doesn't care about black people" which really wasn't appropriate or backed up by any thing. Poor Mike Myers was standing beside him looking like he wan't to throw up. When Kanye hosted Saturday Night Live(Myers's old show) they did a great joke about Myers's US citizenship being cancelled and the FBI investigating his bank accounts and his parents.

Definitely not Damon Wayans though...that's funny that he's an American comedian that you know of...

THAT was funny. :)

Oh, and I so like Mike Myers... I can just imagine his face then. Thanks for that!

Seems to me that instead of crying about the "positions" of the University that you are attending that you just need to transfer to a University that shares your "values". Seems to me that anyone going to a University that is connected to religion shouldn't be surprised by the more conservative values espoused there.

And keep in mind, as much as you are allowed to hold your views, the university and the staff there are allowed to hold theirs. Unfortunately, it is ususally the other extreme, someone who is a person of faith that has to suffer under agnostic and/or athiest professors who at best tend to be indifferent to their standards and faith or at worst are openly hostile.

I hate that you feel persecuted, but in the end you have the choice of where to attend school. At least I think you do.

Oh no, I don't feel persecuted at all. I am in Rome, and I expect myself to do as the Romans do, which is actually not as hard. I used to be a fervent Catholic, after all.

I don't resent their beliefs, but surely, even the most religious would care to examine what is right and what is wrong. It's just such a heavy thing to say that there is "something fundamentally wrong" with a peron who masturbates. It's condemning, for me, to the highest degree because you're saying that there's something wrong and irreversible in the make up of this person.

What makes a thing wrong anyways? Aren't sexual desires and instincts parts of our physical bodies, and consequently, aren't they God-given also?

I don't hate it that they think masturbation is bad. I HATE it that they don't seem to know why other because masturbation seems obscene.

But I appreciate your opinion. I know you're an educator, and that makes getting an opinion from you somewhat... better. Thank you. :)

I do want to point out I agree with you on this point. There is a better way of phrasing things than your professor apparently has done. Whenever discussing behavior that is considered poor or inappropriate effort should be made to separate the person from the behavior, instead of making the person feel like they are a deviant for excercising said behavior.

As for the specific issue of masterbation, while it isn't specifically singled out, argument could be made that it would fall under the general area of "sex outside of marriage" which pretty much blankets any and all behavior that occurs with someone other than or without your spouse. Just something to think about. It appears your "critic" doesn't have a leg to stand on, but if he were willing to actually think and research it out he could make a convincing argument.

Not at all. I actually think you made very valid points and it made me re-examine all my whining. ;)

And you were right. Nobody is forcing anybody to stay where they are.
