14. This Body of Death by Elizabeth George
Back to being a rather typical Lynley/Havers mystery, with the added twist of a new boss with Problems with a Capital P and Havers' mixed feelings about the situation.
The story is rather more convoluted than usual and a few threads are left hanging. The solution left me wondering about the perpetrators ( Read more... ) -
January and February Reads
2. The other hand by Chris Cleave
I started it, liked the voice, but wasn't getting anywhere at the time. Because a friend recommended it to me, though, I persisted.
In the end I liked the book a lot. It was a very moving account on refugees and fighting against injustice.

Autobiographical graphic novel. It starts out recounting the life of the author and at some point moves over into the future. It's a biography of a life that hasn't happened yet. Very interesting.

home for 16 hours
I returned home today around 6 pm from three days in Strobl am Wolfgangsee, where I taught a group of very motivated librarians. I say teaching but actually we were playing with online tools mostly. it was the kind of crisp clear cold day that makes autumn enjoyable (as opposed to the damp, drizzly, foggy ones).

On Sunday night a couchsurfer posted an emergency Couchsurfing request for a night or two in Linz. I responded and said I lived close to the train station, where I met Dan a few hours later, when he was dropped off there by his ride. It turns out he hitchhiked to Linz from the czech republic.

things i wouldn't do for 1 million €
yesterday I saw a little kid at the train station holding her tongue against the escalator's handrail and thus licking the length of it. even thinking of it now it gives me hives and makes me want to break out a brillo pad and scrub myself down with it.

At the moment I have two contradictory urges:
a) tidy up my apartment and get rid of clothes and all kinds of things I don't need.
b) Shopping for unnecessary, fun things.
I don't even know why. I think it might be that it's a pleasant way to spend an afternoon that doesn't require thinking, isn't physically demanding but also doesn't have any ( Read more... ) -

Do you remember, every year in spring when you just started to put away all your winter clothes and the weather suddenly gets cold again? I tried to get the opposite effect a few days ago by deliberately washing all my summer dresses. It helped for a little while at least, so I could sit in the sun on Sunday and enjoy the botanical garden in linz ( Read more... )
