So you think the weight gain you described is because of the the elliptical, or in spite of it?
It really shocked me how nobody ran in Madrid. We got out to some parks and saw runners, but nobody ran near their home. I did a little bit of running and got weird looks.
I'm also curious - is it that the elliptical doesn't burn enough calories compared to whatever you were doing before?

What sort of overuse injuries have you been getting? I think your idea of starting slow and building up is a great one. The common figure I've read about increasing distance is go by the rule of 10%. No more than a 10% increase each time to be on the safe side.
I went running both days this last weekend (sure sign that I'm finally over my cold) and it was definitely a bit treacherous. We stuck to sidewalks instead of the bikepath and ran a lot slower than we would have otherwise.

I wasn't 100% serious that I was sure it was on account of using the machine, but I do see a correlation between NOT exercising and weighing less. So I don't mean machine compared to some other exercise that burns more, I mean machine compared with nothing.
Some possible reason might be: Using the machine increases my appetite by more calories than it burns. Using the machine increases my appetite to break even and I weigh more because I tend to have more food in my body. I happen to use the machine when I have more free time, which means I also have time to eat more.
If I JUST used the machine and changed nothing else, I doubt I would gain weight.
Say more about your strengthening exercises?Oh, nothing too rigorous was necessary because I hadn't been doing ANYTHING so anything would be enough to get a result
