Why I play? 1. War fighting rules 2. 'Camping' in silly clothes is fun. 3. Flirting 4. It's completely unlike work and stress 5. Is right out. 6. Friends.. Friends.. Friends..
For me a huge part of the joy of living in central West was the camping events--it fed my desire for a nomadic lifestyle. I truly enjoy setting up my pavilion and arranging my things within it just so, with a place for everything, and everything in its place, and then working the miracle at the end of the event to get it all packed back down tight enough to fit into the vehicle. I think I would have been happy living my life following some herd of reindeer across the northern mountains, setting up a new camp every few days. Life in the West combines the best of a nomadic lifestyle with the best of being surrounded by a community.
Sure, sometimes one also sees the worst about one's community, but I'm good at ignoring that part, and reminding people to look for the best...
Why? Oh goodness. Ok. 1. The chance to meet (and adopt!) some of the most amazing people ever, that I never would have met otherwise. 2. Knowing that the small things I do at events really make a difference to someone. 3. Sewing:) 4. Garb itself. 5. It feeds my romantic soul.
In no particular order...sarahbellemOctober 15 2009, 16:30:20 UTC
1. Fulfills my costuming needs in eras that I am most interested in.
2. I get to play dress up on the weekends and that makes me insanely happy.
3. It's where I can find the people who share my passions for history, clothing, music, culture of the middle ages and renaissance.
4. I get to haul crap! (Which, as you know, is the REAL reason why anyone plays this game).
5. The chance to create something, be a part of something, so amazingly cool while trying to recapture pageantry, ritual, faith and magic. Not saying that we succeed, but those are things I think we all lack in the modern world and everyone comes to the SCA looking to fill those voids... And it's not just passive fulfillment... You can actually be an active participant and have a real effect on the game.
