Friday evening I went to my work Xmas party. I wasn't going to go, both because there was FNW that night and because my contract is up in a month. But in the end, my curiosity, as well as peer pressure, got the better of me. What are these people like outside of work? I figured I could make some guesses from the dates they brought

You probably should have taken a date as well. While not required, it is generally socially preferred to do so - even someone who is merely a good friend. The same conventions apply to weddings - I'm guessing it is a hold-over from properly arranged dinner arrangements.

The only people who took dates were either engaged or married, about 10 out of 14 people who work there.

It is definitely an idea to keep in mind for the future, though.
