Our water heater just has a dial one adjusts (although it doesn't have temperatures on it). I usually go with "scalding" so that one uses less hot water when one showers, thus giving one the potential to have a very long shower.

And having very hot water is ideal for washing fleece. ;-)

Yes, I'd prefer scalding for the same reason - I can make it colder by adding water from the cold water tap, but I can't make it hotter unless I boil water, which isn't feasible for a shower.

I actually haven't gone investigating our hot water heater yet, but Jack has looked at it in the past and concluded we actually need to open it up (possibly in two places) to adjust the heat.
