Another sigh, another discarded layout. The elegantly dressed woman took off her glasses and ran the other hand through her perfectly coiffed white hair. Putting her glasses on top of the layout Miranda Priestly, editor in chief of Runway magazine, sat down in her chair and leaned back. She closed her eyes and pinched the bridge of her ( Read more... )

You realize deleting the previous post -- including all the comments -- and reposting the story without changing the problematic part isn't a very good idea, right?

Lily is still a dog, and you're still perpetuating a malicious and evil form of racism. But now that other people have pointed this problem out, you're just sticking your head in the sand rather than dealing with the problem. Before, it might have been a mistake. Now it looks more like a considered decision to be racist.

wait. you did it again? somniesperus May 3 2010, 22:01:59 UTC
Really. Really and truly. Is it asking too much just to change the dog's name? That's all it would take. A find-and-replace. It's not going to destroy your artistic vision or materially affect your story. It's one tiny minuscule change that would remove an element from your story that detracts from all the other elements, and that also--please pay attention to this--genuinely hurts other people.Nobody is simply trying to persecute you. Nobody is making a ruckus just because we like being offended or giving you a hard time. We are pointing this out because what you are doing, and the societal attitude that goes with it, is harmful and painful to many people in the real world, not just the faceless people in online fandom ( ... )

I'm honestly more baffled than upset. Judging by the fact that you've reposted the fic, you seem pretty confident that you're in the right. So why not take a second to explain your thinking to us all? Is there something we've missed? If your choice to call the dog Lily is one which you have strong reasons for sticking to, I'm sure we'd all like to know what those reasons are.

Important: This is not at all meant as an attack! Feel free to PM me if you'd like to talk more about this -- I tend to be pretty chill about this stuff, and I promise not to bite your head off if we disagree.

Thanks for this. It's an interesting take on the relationship. I like the way you close the circle between Miranda wishing she could be in the cat's position, and being there ... in the third part ... but only as a part of saying good-bye.

You realize it's unfair to cliffhanger the Science of Fashion and cliff hang this story too? Oh, well, I guess on the bright side it means that whatever you write next pretty much has to address one cliff or the other. (Further new plot-bunnies are, by my not so royal command, "streng verboten!")

i read it, change the name of the dog and you wont have people bothering you. You may want to keep all the charaters from the movie in your story but its gunna cause hell for you because it is seen as racist calling the only african american in the story a dog I guess you didnt want to add another name to the story, keep it true to the movie characters, not if your calling the african american a dog though...
