People learn best by applying the new knowledge to an existing metaphor. If something isn't sticking, try a different metaphor. Let people see and study the goal before you show them "the steps" (because they will learn better if they explore their own possible steps first).
Diagram sentences! It's one of those things that none of my English teachers wanted to teach, because it was boring and literature was much more engaging to the students. But when it's a 10th-grade Latin teacher saying "You don't know what a participle is? OK, we're doing some grammar, right now", it's kind of a relief.
I have no idea.
You're going to rock, K8.
On yearbooks, I'm no help. I never bought one myself for the following reasons: Too expensive, very out-of-date (they went to the printers around January, so we only got half the year's events in it), and half-full of ads. Plus, the only portraits that were in color were the seniors. Why should I show loyalty to the school .
I remember that the yearbook class in my high school spent the vast majority

Check out short-run printers online. A large number of these have popped up and the price has decreased dramatically. Maybe even find one that's willing to drop the price a bit for ad placement.
What about a CD yearbook instead of a print one? Requires a different skillset, but the cost plummets. Might also be objection over the format.
Speaking from students I've seen (rather than my own personal experience) 'getting it' tends to be more of a process than a revelation. I did have one student I subbed who didn't understand borrowing in subtraction until I explained it in Spanish, but for the most part, the revelation's been more on my side than the students'. Like when you realize one student finally 'gets' the reading thing, or I remember last year suddenly noticing how some students finally 'got' sorting and patterning and whatnot. For them, they'd seen those things taught and demonstrated so many times that it slowly just came to them.
Also, I find it helpful to use songs. It's easier to remember stuff in song format than spoken, I think. I still remember a song about sine and cosine I learned back in high school, and while I don't remember what those things actually do anymore, I do remember the song!
